According to a letter dated 1942 by W. A. Derrick from the General Register Office, the 1921 census schedules were damaged by water when they were stored at Leonard Street. The letter presumes that the enumeration books were stored elsewhere, so even though the schedules may have sustained damage, the data will have been preserved in the enumeration books (hopefully). Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the 1931 census records, which were (as far as I know) destroyed entirely by fire in December, 1942. As far as I am aware, the fire destroyed the schedules, enumeration books, plans of division, etc.The Forgotten Family, Genealogist and Family Historian - https://www.theforgottenfamily.co.uk

Here is a link to the letter mentioning the water damage to the 1921 schedules and the total destruction of the 1931 census records by fire in 1942.
