  • My great grandfather Ernest Needham

    Hi,

Would any one be able to help me? I'm trying to research info about my great grandfather (which I thought would be easy).

His name was Ernest Needham & he was born in 1912 (I'm not sure where he was born too). He died in 1972 in Bristol.

Ernest Needham's wife was Frances Stephens & they had 3 children Roy Needham 1934, Brenda Needham 1937 & my grandmother born in 1944 (still alive).

Ernest's father was also called Ernest & was born in 1884 & died in 1959 in Bristol (i'm not sure where he was born either). I've been told that he married someone called Minnie but I have no information on her. I also think they may have been from Yorkshire?

Ernest (1912) was an only child & was in the Army so he was away from home a lot.

If any one could help me find some more information out about his parents that would be great!

do you have any certificates for either Ernest? death/marriage

who were the witness' on the certs?

how do you know that Ernest was an only child? I would think it highly unlikely that a child born in 1912 would be an only child too, unless the mother/father died soon after the child was born. [speaking from experience here :smilee: ]

I would think that the best place to start would be the 1939 register, as both Ernest's would still be alive at this point so would be a good way to begin, especially if you know addresses where they may have been living then. I believe that the 1939 register is available on Findmypast website.

I've been looking for a marriage for Ernest senior and Minnie, but I haven't found a thing so far.

They don't appear to be together on the 1911 census.

Hi Roy & Brenda have but my grandmother has not. Should I take the post down & repost it?

              Sorry, I did not realise!

Hi, I'm not sure if her name was Minnie or if this was just a nickname?

Frances did re marry twice but I never knew their surnames but now I do!

Assuming that Ernest jr's birthdate's accurate in the 1939 register, this ought to be his birth:

                          Births Dec 1913
                          Needham Ernest / Torr / Rotherham / 9c 1549

but I can't see an obvious Needham-Torr marriage for his parents.

Yes, I always had 1912 for his birth but i'm not sure where I got that from so 1913 could be correct!

Could it be possible that Ernest jr's parents did not marry?

This could be right as I once found an electoral roll record with Ernest & Minnie living on Hanham Street.

It's possible, certainly. And Minnie might not be his mother, but his stepmother.

Unless we can find anything, you're going to need to get his birth certificate, which will give his mother's Christian name and maiden name, but I'm not 100% sure about that 1913 birth. I was hoping Ernest senior and Minnie were together in the 1911 census so we could find out their birthplaces, but I can't see them.

Ah, Parkgate's a suburb of Rotherham, which makes the 1913 birth pretty likely.

Good point! I never thought about Minnie not being Ernest's birth mother! I know that Minnie was alive in the 1940's as my nan used to visits her & apparently she was very sick so was always in bed.
