    Then in 1851 census:

    And family
Frances Pettingall Servant Unmarried Female 17 1834 House Servt Newmarket, Suffolk,

Next her marriage to John Canton in Hatfield Q2 1857 ref 3A 360

But in 29.7.1860 Family Search has an illegitimate birth:
    First name(s) Elizabeth Jane
    Last name Pettingall
    Birth year -
    Baptism year 1860
    Baptism date 29 Jul 1860
    Place Hatfield
    Father's first name(s) -
    Father's occupation Single Woman
    Mother's first names(s) Fanny

    Then 1861:

Richard Strickland Head Married Male 30 1831 Costermonger Putney, Surrey,
    Frances Canton Housekeeper Married Female 30 1831 - -
Elizth J Pettingall Daughter Unmarried Female 1 1860 - Putley, Surrey,
John Pettingall Father Widower Male 70 1791 Wheelwright Morden, Cambridgeshire

    Similarly in 1871.
    Lower Common, Putney, Wandsworth, London,
    Household Members
First name(s) Last name Relationship Gender Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
    Richard H Strickland Head - Male 39 1832 - Surrey,
Frances Canton Housekeeper Female 42 1829 - Hertfordshire,
Elizabeth J Pettingall House Keeper Daur Female 13 1858 - Surrey,

So, do you think all these records relate to the same person? If not how many different women have I conflated? How do you account for Elizabeth Jane having Frances's maiden name?

Sorry cant get the census columns to line up.

Think you need the marriage cert and the birth cert. It does look from the above evidence as though it is the same woman. What happened to John Canton? Can you find him in 1861?
Is it possible the child was not hers .... maybe a sister's child who she adopted?
    Anne
Edit to say, the birth dates are a little bit out though. Does the 1861 not give a birth place? The names are unusual but it could be coincidence?

The marriage certificate (PR entry) for John Canton and Frances is available on Findmypast, if you haven't already got it.

In 1861 it seems that John Canton is living with his widowed mother Hannah. He is shown as married, occupation Dealer in marine stores.
      Class: RG 9; Piece: 802; Folio: 166; Page: 18; GSU roll: 542703

It's the baptism of Elizabeth Pettingall in 1860 which seems to be the odd one - unless of course Frances and John and split by then and she decided to use her maiden name for the child rather than the surname Canton. As Anne suggested, you probably need to purchase the birth certificate.

In 1861 Elizabeth J Pettingall appears to be 2 years old, born Putney. The only birth that I can find that appears to fit at all is Elizabeth Jane Strickland - June quarter 1858 Wandsworth Ref 01D 409. No mothers maiden name is given. They are living in a caravan on the common -

Thanks all. I have realised that there are in fact two men called John Canton son of Thomas born around the same time. My relative is the son of Eliza Offord (surname sometimes Cantan), but the man who married Frances Pettingall is from an Irish family unconnected to me. So whilst the problem of the Pettingalls is of general interest it does not affect my own family tree.
