  • Miller

    Hi,
Is there any way I can find out who William Millers parent's where. He was born about 1806 in the 1851 census he was born in Edinburgh and the 1861 census it's Glasgow.
He lived with Helen McFarlane no marriage certificate and on his death certificate it has death as 1862 no parent's names and cause of death unknown. death at 23, Weaver Street Glasgow age 56. He was a Cooper & journeyman.

I don't suppose there is a way but I thought I would ask

    Thanks
    Jan

Is this him on the two censuses you give:
    Name: William Millear
    [William Miller]
    Age: 46
    Estimated birth year: abt 1805
    Relationship: Head
    Spouse: Helen Millear
    Gender: Male
    Where born: Edinburgh, Edinburgh
    Parish Number: 622
    Civil Parish: Barony
    County: Lanarkshire
    Address: 222 Holm Street
    Occupation: Cooper (journ)
    ED: 2B
    Page: 8
    Household schedule number: 27
    LINE: 4
    Roll: CSSCT1851_143

    and 1861
    Name: William Millar
    Age: 56
    Estimated birth year: abt 1805
    Relationship: Head
    Spouse's name : Helen Millar
    Where born: Glasgow, Lanarkshire
    Registration Number: 644/1
    Registration district: Central District
    Civil Parish: Glasgow Inner High
    County: Lanarkshire
    Address: 23 Weaver Street
    Occupation: Cooper
    ED: 73
    Household schedule number: 8
    LINE: 16
    Roll: CSSCT1861_97

    William Millear 8
    John Millear 6
    David Millear 4
    Robert Millear 3 Mo
    Helen Muggoch 13

    William Millar 18
    John Millar 16
    David Millar 14
    Robert Millar 10
    George Millar 8
    Alexander Millar 4
    Peter Millar 4 Mo

Just trying to find him in 1841 census. There is a step daughter on 1851 for a Helen Muggoch so one would expect (maybe) a marriage to a Helen Muggoch but a judyharris25 on 16/08/2016 (Ancestry) has added a contribution suggesting the wife was Helen McFarlane.
Have you contacted the tree owner judyharris25 as she has obviously been on fairly recently. The only marriages i can see at the moment to a Mcfarlane are all in 1700's.

This is a bit odd. Have you seen this?
      1841 census

      Name: Widow William Millar
      Age: 36
      Estimated birth year: abt 1805
      Gender: Female
      Where born: Lanarkshire, Scotland
      Civil Parish: Glasgow St Johns
      County: Lanarkshire
      Address: Belgrove Place No 67
      Occupation: Lappet Clipper
      Parish Number: 644/1
      Household Members:
      Name Age
      James Mcfarlane 35
      Elizabeth Mcfarlane 30
      Widow John Millar 40
      Ann Sterling 35
      Agnes Moor 30
      Widow William Millar 36
      Thomas Millar 12
      John Millar 8

I have noticed that all these refs give William as Millar not Miller.

      edit.

      Just realised they hadn't married.

Just speculation but Thomas and John could be William's children.
          From 1841 census:
          Widow William Millar 36
          Thomas Millar 12
          John Millar 8

There are no Millar children with these two names and same parents for the correct dates but there are these two as Miller.

          JOHN MILLER Parents WILLIAM MILLER/MARY STEVEN FR4488 (FR4488) 10/02/1832 Parish no 644/1 ref 330 294 Glasgow

          THOMAS MILLER Parents WILLIAM MILLER/MARY STEVEN FR4207 (FR4207) 19/01/1829 Parish no 644/1 ref 320 505 Glasgow

          Marriage:

          MILLER
          WILLIAM
          MARY STEVEN/FR6800 (FR6800)
          17/11/1826
          644/1
          400 440

            Again speculation
            From 1841 census
Widow John Millar 40 b 1797 -1801 with rounding down.
            Widow William Millar 36 b 1801 -1805 "
            These could be brothers?

Out of the 29 Baptisms for William and John in Glasgow only these two have the same parents.

Thanks for all the information. Yes Helen McFarlane was married to a Alexandra Muggoch married 1836 Campsie and had a daughter name Helen in 1837.Children William, John, David and my g grandfather Robert I cannot find birth certificates for, but on the others it does say William father and mother Helen but no marriage date. I will e-mail judyharris25 to see if she has any information. Thank you

                Hi Janice,

Just been looking at your Millers. If you are defintely looking at William Miller and Helen McFarlane, they had a boy named James in 1855 ( who most probably died as he is not listed in 1861). If you get a copy of the birth certificate from Scotlandspeople it will confirm the birth places of the parents ( only happened in 1855 registrations). The ref is 644/2 1226 I think. At least that will narrow down your search for Williams parents.
                Good luck
