I am a new user to this forum but been active in trying to build my family tree for a good few years. My problem from the start has been trying to trace my g g grandfather in the 1861 census returns.William Barrett a carpenter married Emma Warland in July 1861 in Lambeth London.William was 39 years old a widower and a carpenter by trade,he died in 1869..His father was shown in the marriage certificate as James Barrett also a carpenter.William gave his address in the marriage certificate as Agnes Street Lambeth.I have searched the 1861 using every variation I can think of for Barrett with no luck.I guess he went missing that night.I have taken a DNA test and a link came up with another tree and a William Henry Barrett born in Brighton in 1822(ties in). This William is a carpenter and his father James Barrett also a carpenter(ties in).I began to get excited with this link and have now discovered William Henry had a brother James Channon Barrett. I know my g grandfather was baptised as James John Channon Barrett in 1869. Could this be the breakthrough?. My question is do you think Channon is unusual enough to be the final clue? It seems very likely to me William Henry named one of his sons from a new marriage after his elder brother, your views will be very much appreciated, thank you.

My first though is that Channon could be his mothers maiden name. This does crop up an awful lot.
Forgot to say Alan, welcome to FTF.
I haven't looked for anything yet so can't comment on your findings but looks quite good with them both having Channon as an additional name.Lin

I was thinking out loud and had the same thought as you, come back Alan!
Not getting far with Channon except for a marriage in Lambeth a bit too earlyLast edited by Elaine; 25-11-16, 20:38.Elaine

I have him in 1851 living in Brighton with his wife Sophia and child Harriet Matilda.I am awaiting a certificate but I believe I might have found Sophia's death in Brighton in 1854.I also found Harriett Matilda age 10 in the 1861 census living in St Pancras London, this might explain how William Henry made it to the capital. In the 1861 census Harriet was living with her aunt and Uncle name of "May" I have ordered Sophia & William's marriage certificate to see if her maiden name was May.I am knocked out with the help and response thank you all so much, Alan Barrett

Possible marriage - James Barrett to Jane Houghton in Alverstoke on 6 Dec 1801 (Sorry no sign of Channon!)
Also, possible children for James and Jane, as well as James Channon
Mary bap 2/2/1803; Jane bap 8/3/1809; Louisa bap 5/10/1810; George bap 29/3/1812 all in Gosport
Sarah bap 12/9/1813; Harriott bap 11/6/1815 and Ann bap 9/3/1817 all in Alverstoke. Ann also matches very nicely with the Ann in the 1841 census.Last edited by ozgirl; 25-11-16, 22:39.Linda
