  • Assumed name?

In early 1900s might someone named Annie assume the name of Nancy?

    e.g. Annie - Nan - Nancy

Annie and Nancy are both diminutives of the name Ann.. They can either be nicknames or names I their own right.

Is it likely that Annie would sign her first name as Nancy when a witness on marriage cert?

Yes, if that was what she called herself in day to day life.

She's Annie on her own marriage BMD entry.

Yes, why not? Anyone can use any name they like as long as they are not trying to defraud or impersonate.

When my great aunt May married, the forenames on her marriage cert were May Sarah. The forenames on her birth cert were Sarah Ann. She was named after her mother, another Sarah Ann, but as her birthday was in May, she was always called that within the family to distinguish her from her mother. When she died, her death was registered as May W*****, no mention of Sarah.
