  • Johan Mikael Malmstrom passing through England in 1887

Johan Mikael Malmstrom born 1869 02 05 in Orebro Sweden.
1887 03 25 he emigrates, destination Red Wing Minnesota USA.
He arrives in Hull England on the ship Romeo, here I lose all track.

I need help to follow his journey through England to the United States.
I know he arrived in Hull, but did he stayed in England or continued his journey.

All knowledge about him after his arrival in England are welcome, even in the US.

Alternative surname might be Malmström, Malstrom, Johansson.

I have moved this thread to the Family History Research board as it is more likely to be spotted there.

Hello Fredrik and welcome to the forum.
Northern Europe to the USA via Hull was quite a common migration route at that time. There was a special railway station in Hull that arriving boat passengers were escorted to, from where they got on trains bound for Leeds, Manchester and then the port of Liverpool. I've never heard of a specific set of records for arrivals at Hull, or for rail transit across England. Some passengers are known to have stopped off to meet with contacts in Leeds or Manchester, eventually settling in one of these cities rather than travelling on - others completed their railway journey and sailed on to the USA.
Can you tell us more about how you know when he arrived in Hull? Was it his intention to migrate from Sweden to the USA by the above route? Or was he a sailor/seaman working on a ship which he decided to leave on his arrival at Hull?
Have you found him in later life on any UK or USA census return?
His names could have been anglicised, so you may have to widen your search, spelling wise.

I don't have access to passenger lists from Sweden, sorry. The only UK arrivals I can access are on Ancestry UK and there's nothing on there for that information, as far as I can see.
Did the record give you both a sailing date and also the arrival? Were there any other details given about Johan, e.g occupation, intended forward travel? Did he seem to be travelling alone, with other family members? Have you found family members of Johan in either UK or USA?

On Ancestry there is a Johan Mikael Malmstrom listed in the Sweden, Emigrants in Church Books, 1783-1991. It states he left Sweden 16.3.1887, he is single and travelling alone.

There is a Johan Malmstrom, aged 24 travelling from Liverpool to New York on the ship Servia departing 24.4.1893.

If this is him that leaves a few years unaccounted for!!

Hmm don't think that passenger listing is right. There are several listings for a Johan Malmstrom travelling to New York and back to Sweden. There is also a Johan Malmstrom born in Finland who is travelling to New York too. Unfortunately can't find a passenger listing for a Johan Mikael!!

Frazzled, I wondered about the occupation of Johan M, as I have found several Malmstrom males in UK census & passenger lists who were crew on various ships.
It could be helpful, I think, to know a bit more about JMM's immediate family; did they all stay in their native town/emigrate, did they have a trade, or occupation, which could help track them in census returns?
I wonder if your reference to Sweden emigrants in church books is the record Fredrick found?

Saw that one for Liverpool to NY 1893 on the Servia that Frazzled put up but cant see it arriving in NY or him being in the 1891 census in the UK.

Well done, Vera. Some very useful information, showing lots of links between family members and various parts of the USA.
(Couldn't view the Romeo passenger list as I don't have a worldwide sub.)

Could be a problem with USA searches - all 3 of JMM's names lend themselves to errors on the original census returns, let alone mis-transcriptions in the index!

Have you noticed that 2 names down there is a family also going to Red Wing. Can't read the name but I wonder if they were travelling with Johan? Do you recognise the surname fredrik?

Ah just looked at Vera's link and it is Anderson.

Not having a lot of luck with any of the above names on passenger lists from England to America.

The only reference I have found in Minnestoa is an entry in the 1900 census for a John Malstrom an inmate in Rochester State Hospital. The year of birth is not quite right and there is very little detail but you just never know!
