  • Help with word on old document

    Hi!

I'm trying to decipher a word on an old marriage register from the Highlands of Scotland.
On 29 Jan 1805: John Macleod ??? to Ann Macdonald both at Knock.

The question is, what is ??? - please see image below.

I know what I'd like it to say, but am not sure that it does!

    Thanks for taking a look

Servant? Or Serv. to be exact. The initial letter looks identical to the S of the name Smith above.

Could it be the abbreviation "Junr" with the r a superscript?
So he would be John Macleod the younger.

I don't think it has to be restricted to an occupation. I have seen all sorts of things entered in parish registers! Usually a comment about occupation, status or address.

I thought Jnr too but the others are given their occupations, eg sailor. ?

Thanks for all your thoughts...it is difficult.
Could it be 'Tent' as an abbreviation for 'Tenant'?

I would plumb for Junr. Other J's and r's in the same document are written in the same fashion and combining this with the ups and downs of the middle of the word leaves us

                    with Junr.

It's junior, same "J" as in John.

The place is Knock - there's quite a flourish to the base of some of the writer's letters.

Thanks everyone - Junr it is, then...I'm convinced. Many thanks to you all.
