  • Birmingham, AL

Researching a particularly tricky family from Germany that came to Birmingham, AL around 1911.

Frank & Sibilla (Sybella,Syvella are just some of the mispellings) Schultz (sometimes spelled at Schulz, Shultze, & Schultze) are very tricky to find documents on!

I know he was born in 1883 somewhere in Germany and that is fathers name is John. He married Sibilla in Germany around 1907 and he died in the 1950`s.

She was born around 1887 in Germany and died at age 89 in August of 1975.

They had many children, two when they came to the US.

They never left the Birmingham, AL area once settled in the US.

Any help or suggestions are much appreciated!

    Thank you!

        1940 US Census

Frank Schultze Head Married Male 57 1883 Germany
Sihulla Schultze Wife Married Female 52 1888 Germany
Sopehia Schultze Daughter Single Female 18 1922 Alabama
Frank D Schultze Son Single Male 17 1923 Alabama

Note that Sophia and Frank D were born 1922 and 1923 .......... that provides an idea of dates before which they had to have arrived in the US

from the image of that 1940 Census ...........

Lived in the same house since at least 1935
Frank b 1883 Coal Man or Canal Man
Sophia Saleslady in (can't read) Store
Frank D's age on census could be 7 not 17
Frank D no occupation shown BUT an earlier column shows he has "done" 2 yrs school or college, which fits with age 7

Both Frank (1883) and Sybilla are Naturalised

The 1930 Census provides a little more information on when they might have arrived in the US

Frank Shultz Head M 46 Germany
Sylvela Shultz Wife F 44 Germany
              Frances Shultz Daughter F 19 Germany <<<<<<<<< b.ca 1911
              Hettae Shultz Daughter F 17 Alabama <<<<<<<<< b.ca 1913
Katie Shultz Daughter F 15 Alabama
Charlotte Shultz Daughter F 13 Alabama
Sylvela Shultz Daughter F 11 Alabama
Sofia Shultz Daughter F 8 Alabama

Thus travel to the US has to be between 1911 and 1913 (or search between 1910 and 1913)

The image shows that Frank's parents were both born in Poland although he was born in Germany

Year of immigration to the US is stated to be 1910, and they are Naturalized

              Frank is a Coal Miner
Frances is a Waitress in a Restaurant
My grandmother, on the beach, South Bay, Scarborough, undated photo (poss. 1929 or 1930)

Researching Cadd, Schofield, Cottrell in Lancashire, Buckinghamshire; Taylor, Park in Westmorland; Hayhurst in Yorkshire, Westmorland, Lancashire; Hughes, Roberts in Wales.

                No wonder I couldn't find them in 1920 :D

Frank Sheets Head M 37 Germany
Sybil Sheets Wife F 33 Germany
Matilda Sheets Daughter F 14 Germany
Mary Sheets Daughter F 12 Germany
Francis Sheets Daughter F 10 Germany
Helta Sheets Daughter F 7 Alabama
Katy Sheets Daughter F 5 Alabama
Loudie Sheets Daughter F 3 Alabama
Sybil Sheets Daughter F 0 Alabama

Now Frank states they immigrated in 1912, and that his mother and father were both born in Germany.

They seemingly had 3 daughters when they immigrated
