  • Trying to find a 2nd marriage

I am trying to find a 2nd marriage for Miles Dickenson my 3x Gt Grandfather.
Miles was a Primitive Methodist Minister/Superintendent,covering a circuit from 1844-1886
I have all the census details from 1841 through to 1891.Miles died in 1898.

Miles married Ann Amelia Harp Sept 1849 Tarporley where he was born in 1824
5 children from the marriage all born in different places wherever the circuit took him.Ann A died 1886 Ormskirk

In 1889 Miles last Ministry station was Southport. In 1891c RG12/3039/120/27 Miles is at 36 Laurel Grove Southport with a wife named Susannah.

I cannot find a marriage. The only marriage someone found is in Blackburn to either Alice Sagar or Isabella Miller.

Any help to find Susannah ? appreciated

Do you think there might be an error by the enumerator and she is his sister, not his wife?
Here is a Susannah Dickenson in 1881, born in Tarporley and she is unmarried

Ah, similar to Val's post! Being as how he was a minister I think sister is more likely!!

I think you & Anne are on to something here & probably an enumerators error.I don't know who his siblings were.
Miles parents were Joseph Dickenson (I think he was a schoolteacher) & Martha Lydiatt

Louise Jane b.1852 was Miles & Anns only daughter.they also had 4 sons.I am aware that Louise & husband travelled sometimes to Ontario with her brother Robert b.1858(apparently that is where Robert also died in 1928)
My 2x Gt Grandfather was Miles/Anns son Joseph b.Chorley 1854-1879.
When Joseph died Miles split the family taking Alexander b.1876 & bringing him up.Meanwhile Josephs wife Mary Ann nee Ball went back to her parents with their daughter Margaret Amelia b.1878.my Gt Gran,& she never knew she had a brother, always saying she was an only child & wished she had brothers or sisters. So sad

                        Baptisms of Miles' siblings?

Hannah Dickinson 19 Aug 1833 Tarporley, Cheshire, England Joseph, Martha

The family in 1841 ........... looks as though mother Martha has died ....

so Susannah was Miles' sister, possibly/probably housekeeping for him after the death of his wife.

Looking back in my notes I have a possible death for Martha Dickenson nee Lydiatt in1838.

It is more than likely that she may have been buried at St Chad's in Over,Tarporley where her & Joseph married 7.11.1817

I wouldn't get too bothered about the spelling of Dickenson/Dickinson. Until the 20th century the family probably didn't bother too much. Even today this is an error which many non-Dick*nson people would make. Make it a rule to search both names!
