Yes, I know he was buried in the National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa. Died of illness in civil war. Wife's name was Sarah Jane Atkinson. There were several children, my grandfather William Francis Marshall, Anna or (Amy), Thomas E. and Iassc. The 1850 and 1860 census showed them living in Indiana. Sarah re-married Bedford Dixon and possible died in 1907 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
So, what more do you want to know about him? Looking to find out more about him in NC, and his parents there? I think you've probably already realized that the censuses before 1850 didn't list individuals except Head of Household.
Have you looked at the county biographies? They do exist for Parke County. You'll need to search thru the book online:
Discover your family history. Explore the world’s largest collection of free family trees, genealogy records and resources.
sometimes you can still find the books online
So, Thomas Marshall was dead and his family had moved, before these books were published. Nonetheless, it's possible that your peeps might be mentioned. And it's possible that it gives info about his parents or grandparents.
So, please let us know what you've searched, especially
Probate records? (but unlikely to assist with identifying his ancestors.., but possibly a sibling, aunt or uncle, cousin, etc)
obit/newspapers?
CW records? familysearch has this record, tho again, I doubt it would be useful to search for his parents:
I'm new at this. I've searched for my great great grandfather for a year & haven't found his name. At 70 plus years old, I would just like to know that.
OK, I take it that you have not looked in the County Biographies and Histories.
The link I gave is to a book that indexes the Biographies/Histories books of Parke Co. Here's the page that I think contain your known ancestors:
At the beginning of the index book, there is a table of abbreviations. 'P' indicates that it came from Portrait and Biographical Record of Montgomery, Parke and Fountain Counties published 1893.
Well, it's actually a write-up about Sarah's parents:
This Thomas S Marshall "was born near Bloomingdale, Parke County... and is the son of Alfred Marshall, who emigrated from North Carolina"
I would suspect that Alfred is brother or cousin of your Thomas. Have you known this? Heard of him before? Already had him in your family tree?
I am an advocate of DNA autosomal testing, and if you can find a descendant of the two Marshall men mentioned in the biography who would also test, you might be able to solidify the theory. But we're not done looking at Biographies.
And - it could be useful to find DCs and obits for Alfred and the brother mentioned "Judge John Marshall". Indiana DCs might be online in Ancestry...and obits might be in the local public library or genealogy society or historical society. GenealogyBank some times have them too.
Alfred died too early for a DC (1869) and John died in 1906, but his parents were "unknown". Still worth it to try to find both obits.
THe bios indicate that the Marshalls came from a Quaker background. Ancestry has many Quaker meeting records online, and one tree credits one of those records to name the parents. Dunno if it's true.
Do you have an Ancestry sub?
Second index listing does not add to the picture - it lists the men of Parke who died in the War:
I hope you can take it from here, but please let us know if anything turns up - or if it's a bust.
ftDNA's autosomal test ("Family Finder") is on sale at the moment - but your best bet may be with AncestryDNA because of their large database. And migrate results to gedmatch.com
Follow up thoughts:
* trying to find probates for him and the two other Marshalls might be interesting. Especially his - he may name one of the others as executor, creating more credence that they are related. Ancestry has many probates, not sure about Parke
* So Thomas joined the Army, and so did Alfred - not exactly a Quaker thing to do - Alfred definitely had Quaker background.
* I haven't looked for him in the 1850 & 60 - is he near the other two Marshalls?
* Land grant records for Indiana are on Ancestry - did Thomas get one?
There are several trees on Ancestry for John, that list his parents.
