    How unusual is this notation in the cause of death of a Scottish 19th century death certificate?

    It reads Cause of Death:
    Heart (disease) (supposed to have been) 4 hours. No medical attendant.

    That sort of thing was very common. There was no requirement for a death to be certified by a doctor till late in the 1800s. Prior to that anyone with a connection to the deceased could register it, and the cause of death would therefore just be a layman’s description.
