  • Two Omer Butterfield's on same page of 1880 US Census? Any ides?

Hi folks. I haven't been around for a while, but I know where to come when I need some help. ;D

I've found an anomaly on the 1880 US Federal Census, Maine>Aroostook>Weston>217. I'm researching the family of Omer Dudley Butterfield, b 24 Apr 1880 in Maine, parents unknown. Ancestry pointed me to this census page where I note on line 14 a very possible candidate for my Omer although this one is an Omer E rather than D. The thing is, on line 10 above him is an Omer Butterfield, five years older, with another family, noted as adopted.

Add to that, the older Omer is with family Smith, and above family Smith is family Scanlin with Cordelia Smith, step dau, with them rather than the Smiths. I've no interest in the other families, but am trying to understand what the scoop is with Omer.

Any ideas what is going on here?

From FamilySearch it looks like Ida was a McKenney. I'm trying to understand the census though. I'm less interested in the individuals--I can ferret that info info out myself but thank you for reminding me to check FamilySearch. Was that 1880 page an anomaly, an error, or is it a process they used which makes no sense to me?

Definitely sent to try us but can't work out Omer (Smith ) past 1880 with any accuracy.

Thanks Elaine. I don't need to go back on the Butterfields; it's the Flemings & their descendants I'm tracking but I did want to make sure I had the right Omer. You've figured out the mystery of the other Omer I think. That was what was bugging me. Tx again!
