Would love some help with Mary Jane, please, if possible?
When she married Thomas Pilkington at Darley, Derbys on 1 May 1862, she gave her name as Mary Jane Mitchell Elliot, d/o David Elliot.
Looking at the census records, her year of birth age doesn't vary, always showing as 1844/45, but her place of birth does vary, although it's always somewhere in Derbyshire:
1851 = Asbourne (meant to be Ashbourne, possibly?) - the family are in Wath on Dearne
1861 = Cumton (can't find any such place in Derbyshire) - the family are in Matlock
1871 = Matlock - married now, living in Darley
1881 = Matlock - married, living in Darley
1891 = Ashbourne - married, living in Darley
1901 = Ashbourne - married, living in Darley
1911 = Ashbourne - married, living in Darley
From the 1851 and 1861 census records, her parents are shown as David Elliot* and wife Caroline, however I can't find a marriage for David and Caroline. The second child I know about (from the 1851 census records) was Robert Elliot b. Clown(e) in 1848.
* David's given place of birth varies between France, Belgium and Enniskillen !
I can't find a likely birth registration for a Mary Jane (+/- Mitchell) Elliot between 1843-45, but there is a Mary Jane Mitchell registered in Worksop RegDist Q3 1844. This makes me think that Mary Jane wasn't David's daughter, but was Caroline's before she and David married (assuming that they did marry, that is).
So, boiling it down .....
1. Can anyone find a more likely birth for Mary Jane?
and
2. Can anyone find a marriage for David and Caroline?
Hope this makes some sort of sense.
Thanks
