It’s most likely that James and Seamus O’Sullivan are the same person.
    ‘Seamus’ died in Limerick 1974

I have been given a copy of newspaper cutting regarding the funeral of Seamus O' Sullivan, NO date on the cutting though.

It reads…. Seamus O' Sullivan K.M., 114 O'Connell St. Limerick died aged 83. The late Mr O'Sullivan was a director of E. D. O'Sullivan & Co. Ltd., shoe specialists for over 20 years. He was a Captain in the IRA and was in the GPO Garrison during the 1916 Rising. He is survived by sons: Mr E. D. O'Sullivan, Mr J. D. O'Sullivan. Daughters: Miss L O'Sullivan, Mrs K O'Nolan. Sister LOUISA POLLARD and sister-in-law Mrs E. Dore.
Funeral at St. Michael's Churchto St Lawrence Cemetery following Requiem Mass.
A Guard of Honor formed by Limerick Knights of Malta.

(I know the full names of the above persons but not given them just in case the are still alive. I know Louisa had died as I have her death certificate as she was married to my grandpop’s brother Francis Dominic Pollard.)

    Re-Bureau of Military History, 1913-1921.
Have found a Statement by Seamus O' Sullivan signed 1st June 1950 which gives his address as The Bungalow, Revington Park, Limerick, Ireland.

Other Surnames related to the O'Sullivan family are Daly and Clarke, I would be pleased to hear from anyone who might be related.

Are these related to Seamus O'Sullivan's family I wonder?

    This fits!!!
"Ironically however, few people in Limerick or anywhere in Ireland played a bigger part in the fight for Irish freedom than the family associated with O'Sullivan's Shoes"

I would like to hope you were right Teresa, but I have a James O'Neill, a draper in Co Limerick and I know his views only too well back in the 1850's, as I have found letters he wrote from Limerick to a Tipperary newspaper, but despite the "fit" I cannot link him into a well known Drapers shop named James O'Neill!! Sadly O'Sullivan/Sullivan like O'Neill are very common names in Ireland, particularly in Cork. My OH's Sullivans are from Cork and Inchigeela is the main Sullivan area in Cork, many thousands from there!!

Yes James and Sheamus are interlinked!! When I was looking into my James O'Neill possible marriage and history in Limerick, I actually found about 10 James O'Neill living in the one town about the same time, and I never could tell whether or not my James ever married before he fled to the USA!! I am still looking for him after 1869, which was the last sighting of him in a New York directory! Good luck with your Sullivans!

Wanted to add that although James and Sheamus are interchangeable, I am not sure how you are linking your James unemplyed grocer, age 20 1911 Dublin, born Cork City around 1890, into a Seamus who died Limerick 1974? Where is your limk, except for the name? Have you tried the 1911 and 1901 Census looking for a James/Seamus/Sheamus O'Sullivan/Sullivan born around the same time? If you find one already there thenm your Dublin one cannot be the same one.

Hi Janet, I know what you are saying, but Louisa O'Sullivan is the correct person on the Dublin Census records who married my Grandpops, brother Francis Dominic Pollard. Louisa's father was John O'Sullivan a Tea Tester when they married. I have ther marriage certificate and both of their Deaths certificates. Louisa and her husband Frank were also involved in the 1916 Rising before they were married as well as another Pollard brother.

So who is James/Seamus O'Sullivan and where does he fit in to your family? Do you think he is the same James on the 1911 Census? A person in the shoe industry has often undergone apprenticeship. My James O'Neill is an apprentice Draper in Limerick from the age of 14 to21.

I suspect that his son's owned the shop and made their father a Director of the business.

I can't find ANY Seamus O'Sullivan on the 1901 or 1911 Census records anywhere in Ireland.
I've also trawled all through the James O'Sullivans on the other 1901 & 1911 Ireland census and can't find another that could possibly be him..all born in different Counties, married to different spouses or have different fathers.

I presume you have also looked at other possible spellings of Seamus eg Sheamus and SHEMUS?

You mentioned in an earlier post that you felt Seamus and James may be the same person. They may well be one and the same as Seamus is the Gaelic/Irish version of James.

                      Thank you Sue1,

I might be of Irish descent, but don't know the Gaelic/Irish versions of the name James.

I have looked for Seamus O'Sullivan on the Ireland Census records even trying other spellings, but can't find any. I know a couple of my Grandpops siblings spoke Gaelic and one signed his marriage certificates in Gaelic! All very confusing. LOL!

                        Teresa,
I assume this is the document you are referring to?

As mentioned by several posters above, Seamus is the Irish version of James. I agree that the James in the census is the same person as the Seamus who was involved in Easter 1916. I haven't read all 14 pages of the statement closely but noticed that he makes reference on page 9 to spending the night before the rising at home in Arranmore Avenue - same address as the 1911 James.
The statement looks very interesting - lots of familiar names including many who were executed by the British for their part in Easter 1916.

It doesn't look like she was imprisoned for very long but Kilmainham is a grim place! Have you ever been? It's fascinating and the guided tours they do are brilliant.

23 April 1916 Liberty Hall, Dublin City, Ireland

Sean McDermott informs Jim O'Sullivan and Ned Daly that the action is postponed until the following day, Easter Monday so they start getting mobilised. Sleeps at home that night at Arranmore Avenue, North Circular Road.

The grandson of James' brother contacted me a while ago as he knew Louisa and Frank. He also sent me a photo of James in uniform which matches other photo's of James O'Sullivan I've also seen ...who married into the Daly family from Limerick 1918. I've also seen the marriage Certificate of Jame's O'Sullivan, who's father is named as John O'Sullivan (deceased).
