I have hit a brick wall with my ancestor named George Ricketts, he was born in London 1821. At some stage he moved to Derby and worked for Midland Railway. He married a Hannah Fletcher in 1848, on the marriage certificate he was a Pointer on the Railway but he then became a Valet/Butler. I cannot find him anywhere on the 1851 census and is not listed with Hannah. However I know he came home as he was there for the death of a child in 1853. I also cannot find him in 1871 but in 1861 he was at home with Hannah. I have tried everything. My question really is - is there a list of people in service and can I find him any other way? I also cannot find him in 1841 but do not know alot about him before he moved to Belper in Derby. Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi Yes I do have all that information re bankruptcy and the bit about Hannah. I did see the George Clark Innkeeper too but not sure about it. I will look into it again though, there are other George Clark's but not all born in London so could be a possible, but where was he 3 years after his marriage in 1851!!

Also he was around when his son got married in 1873 as he is noted on marriage certificate as a Valet/Butler, so not sure if George Clark could be the same person, as surely his son would have not put occupation. I have ordered his other sons marriage certificate to see what is on that one. Just out of interest his daughter Annie Ricketts also disappears after the 1891 census. Very illusive ancestors!

Just because he was named on his son's marriage cert doesn't mean a thing, unfortunately. If he was not asked whether his father was alive or dead then he might not have volunteered the information. He gave his father's name and last known occupation, as he was required to do. It doesn't mean his father was in his life. I have many certs where I know the father to be deceased but it doesn't say so, or where the father is declared deceased, but is alive and kicking. I also have certs where the father's name was just made up, presumably out of embarrassment for illegitimacy.

Bingo I think I may have found him in the 1851 census under 'Richie' age 30 living in Hanover Square working as a footman for an Edward Street. I think it is most probably him as there is a transcription error and it is definitely 'Ricketts'. Also alot of the employees and also the Head come from Derby. It was Val that got me thinking of going about it in a different way. I have searched a Richie for births etc and there is non. Now just need to find him in 1871!!

Have actually found him thanks to Val, I came at it from a different angle and he was a Footman in Hanover Square working for Edward Strutt (also a transcription error as noted as Street!). Edward Strutt was a wealthy landowner etc from Belper so it makes sense that I have the right George. Thanks everyone. He was down as George Richie but there is no one of that name listed anywhere and it is definitely Ricketts on the census.
Still struggling with 1871!!

I was wondering about this one as a possible for 1881.
George Ricketts aged 55 Married Born Paddington
Butler to Henry ? C Leigh Bennett, Barrister at law
living at Thorpe, Surrey
There is a Railway Employment Record which has a George Rickett being employed as a Machinist in August 1875 and then leaving in May 1876 having completed almost 20 years service. Off good character and ability. Based in ? Haselden. Wonder if he changed jobs after the accident.
Can also see a George Ricketts in 1891 as a visitor, widower, born Middlesex, in Paddington at a Butler's residence.,

Still can't see him in 1871 but likely on the Railway somewhere
