found 2 things of interest on 1939, my dad was in a strange place. Not sure who the person was as the hed of household so have asked my cousin to ask his dad who she was!!!
secondly now I have a date of birth for my elusive Maria butler as 15th January 1870 ill I be able to trace her further back, I have so far not been able to find her on 1871 census or located her birth.

This looks like your Maria Butler:

England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
      Name: Maria Butler
      Gender: Female
      Birth Date: 15 Jan 1870
      Baptism Date: 2 May 1884
Baptism Place: Sutton near Croydon, Surrey, England
      Father: William Butler
      FHL Film Number: 994430

Baptised 14 years after birth, so may not have been born in the Croydon area of course.

The one born in hampstead always throws up confusion as it looks like mine but that one later married a Shurety and is living with her inlaws in 1891.
The christening is mine I believe as that date co-insides with her discharge from the metropolitan district school.

The Hailsham one has parents Frederick & Elizabeth (surname transcribed as "Butter" on Ancestry 1871) so she doesn't look like yours either, if the Sutton baptism is right.

what about this one for 1871
Maria Butler born 1870 London Middlesex
              Mother Maria born 1825 Cornwall
              Father William born 1826 Middlesex
              and siblings
              John 1859
              Eliza 1861
              George 1863
              Charles 1867

living in? a Caravan on Hampstead Heath

which would fit with the one born in Hampstead

this is where the confusion starts as my maria has a father William and brother Charles but both born Woolwich. The he one on hampstead heath in a caravan is the one that married Shurety as she is on a later census with her in laws.

that's what I want to know. lol. My dad was shown as being with her in 1939 register but I don't know who she is so asked my cousin to ask his dad, my dads brother only surviving sibling but he does not know as he was only 3 at the time.

After 'speaking' to Gloryer I believe I have Val. It doesn't help to solve her puzzle though of why he was there.

I can only think that's where he was evacuated to but I thought his brother would have known that when we asked him, he should have been sent there as well.

Families could be split up, maybe because they went through their schools. My father was evacuated to a place in Hunts, he was nearly 11 - his younger brother and sister were sent to Kent - and I don't think they were even billeted together and my father wasn't sure where in Kent they went, the last time we spoke about it.

Regarding late baptisms - you often find people get baptised just before marriage in a church due to not being able to provide proof to the vicar of the earlier one. Also perhaps employers wanted to make sure new employees had been baptised too.
