Hello everyone:
following the discovery of some old family papers, I have a bit more information on my Irish granddad, and would like to take this further. Any tips on where to look are appreciated, I have already searched Ancestry without luck.
Name: James Joseph Dempsey
DOB: 16.07.1903 (taken from death certificate)
POB: Dublin, Ireland (as above)
I would love to find his birth record, and order the certificate. As far as I have been told, his mother was called Elizabeth Kirby/Kirkby and came from the North of England.
His father was Irish, named John.
I have a possible family in Dublin in 1911, although the mother isn't stated as English, so I'm not sure if this is them. I haven't found a marriage for them yet either.
On an old postcard to my granddad was the following information:
posted 12 Sept 1927, postmark Baile Atha Clait? (Gaellic), stamped Dublin,Eire
Addressed to J Dempsey
Indian Draft Depot
Royal Fusiliers
Hounslow
London
"Dear Jimmy
I am posting your clothes on now as I only got your letter this morning. Watch out for them. Send word when you're coming. Maryan is gone off since last Wednesday. No wedding"
Frustratingly, it is unsigned, so I have no idea if it is from his mother/father/sibling etc. There is also no clue who Maryan is (the spelling and punctuation isn't great, so this is quite possibly Mary Ann or Marian). On a side note, I would love to know her story
Anyway, back to the point. My granddad lived in Ireland but served with the British Army, he definitely went to India and he definitely contracted malaria. I don't know when he came out, but he signed back up during the second world war.
So, can anyone help me to:
A. Locate a birth and/or baptism record
(I have his marriage record thanks to this site)
B. Find out more about his army career
Thanks very much in advance
Denise
