Hi all, Just wondered if anyone has any ideas about solving this long standing brick wall. My Great grandfather was a James Jones born in Holywell Flintshire in about 1861 according to the 1891,1901, and 1911 census's. I have his marriage certificate, which confirms his age and his marriage to my Great grandmother ( Elizabeth Stevenson ) in Miles Platting , Manchester in 1883. Trouble is there is no other reference to him, He wasn't born in Holywell in 1860-1862 nor is he on any other census. Here's hoping some one has some advice William

Does his marriage cert give his Fathers name? I had the same trouble with Richard Williams always giving born Holyhead though I did manage to find his baptism in Llanfalog where the family had always been christened then I found them living in Holyhead.
Try tracing the parents whereabouts in earlier census using the fathers Occupation if possible.
I don't have any subs to do look ups but I am sure with a bit of help here you will find something.

The same thing goes with all of us we never wanted to know when we were young enough to ask the relatives so now we find it hard to discover things especially with Welsh Research.
Where did they end up, lots of Welsh Builders were in Liverpool and lots of history can be found on them as they built churches and housing estates, books have been written about them and one man paints the houses on to canvas before being demolished and tries to keep the history recorded.
I have Jones too but it is good to remember that their occupations are the big clue.
Naming patterns also help as they usually followed the Welsh naming patterns

https://www.llgc.org.uk/catalogues0/ The National Library of Wales is a great source for looking for wills and marriage bonds, I got lots of information from them once I had joined and went through the wills on line, they sent me copies for a very small cost which I learned a lot from them, save this for when you get a bit more information as they did not have to own a lot to leave a will.

Just some thoughts on James
1871 Wales Census
John 42 Labourer b Holywell, Flintshire
Maria 41 all born Holywell, Flint
Mary 21 "
Henry 16
Ann 14
James 7 BORN 1864/5
Joseph 1
living Greenfield, Holywell
There is another child Harriet out of the house acting as a Nurse aged 9 and Isaac Ellis is with maternal grandmother in Staffs
This couple John and Maria can be seen in Flintshire in 1850 with first child Mary and in 1861 with the addition of Ellen and Isaac Ellis. John is a miner during this period.
Sometime between 1871 and 1881 John dies and mother Maria can be found in Staffordshire, England with her mother Ellen Thomas and children Isaac Ellis, Harriet Cadman (nee Jones), James and Joseph. There is also Annie Cadman aged 2 the daughter of Harriet and her husband William.
For the two marriages I can see, Isaac and Harriet, the father is John but wondered as they were the eldest they would remember their father's name and James being that much younger may have just used the name of his brother or confused the name and said Joseph.

Create an account for free with Findmypast to discover your family history and build a family tree. Search birth records, census data, death records and more.
The image on FMP has them marrying in 1889. James Jones to Gertrude Boulton. James is a Collier and his father John, Deceased also a Collier.
So just ignore that previous diatribe please
Back to scrutinising that mc of James to Elizabeth.
