  • Of Liberty of ....

I have just come across a marriage entry on freereg.org.uk in Woodhouse, Leicestershire where the bride's surname is given as "WHITCROFT, OF LIBERTY OF ULVERSCROFT" Can someone tell me what the significance of "OF LIBERTY OF ULVERSCROFT" is please? The Groom's surname is given as "CAMBERS of W".

    many thanks

Ulverscroft was a extra parochial liberty. It's all about ecclesiastical boundaries. Here's an explanation.

Thank you for that, Phil. A lot of my ancestors were from the Liberty of Eye and Dunsden in South Oxfordshire and I always wondered what Liberty meant. That explanation makes a lot of sense.
