  • connecting a printer with wifi

    I have a hp printer that has got to be at least 10 years old, it is brilliant, prints beautiful photos & will scan slides & negatives etc, what it doesnt have is wifi & i did buy a wifi adapter that fits into the usb port that over the years has worked fine. The Samsung tablet i have has wifi & i downloaded a wifi app that happily connects the tablet to the printer
    but what prints out is gibberish, does anyone know, is this because of the format of what im trying to print that the printer doesnt like or would buying a new wifi adapter make any difference.

    Update, Sorry the printer does not have wifi but has optional bluetooth that i bought an adapter for that did work fine with various phones
    But trying to print out census & bmd information etc From the tablet via the bluetooth connection just prints out rubbish if it prints at all.

      When you use input or output devices, the operating system uses small additions to its program called 'drivers', with these, the operating system knows how that specific item works.
      Without them, they try to communicate, but may be using the wrong commands etc and you end up with a load of gibberish.
      Changing Wifi adaptor will have no effect, it is the fact that your device that is sending the instructions does not have the correct software to actually run it.

        Trevor, Thank you, il try downloading another bluetooth app to see if it will work any better, failing that i can get a very simple but wifi enabled printer for $34 or a much better one for $60, but it would be good if i could just get the process to work with the printer i already have.

          Trevor, I could not get bluetooth working properly no matter how i tried, so,just in case anyone else is thinking of buying a printer with wifi, i bought today a hp envy 5530, its brilliant, so easy to set up & is printing from my tablet with out any problems, it has a touch screen & prints realy good quality photos, for a printer under $100 its good value.

            But does it scan slides and negs? I have an old Epson RX640 which does this but it isn't wi-fi. Have been unable to find a new wifi model that does.

                @GallowayLass

                If you really need to keep your old printer for its special facilities and it is USB connected then I suspect the only way is to purchase a wireless print server such as the one here from Maplins

                Maplin is back with a huge range of power, computing, imaging & audio products. Visit the electronics specialist. Free UK delivery over £35.

                However, the cost is usually more than a basic wireless printer such as the HP Deskjet 2540 All-in-One so you would really have to consider if your old machine is worth the expense and even if ii will last long enough to make the outlay worthwhile. For the record I could give you no guarantee that this print server will work for you.

                  Thanks Nightryder and David. I really do need to hang on to my beloved old Epson as I have a huge collection of slides taken by Grandmother and also some taken by my mother. I'm going to scan all the ones that contain family. I find it most odd that there seems to be no up to date wi-fi equivalent of my old machine. I even wrote to Epson asking them which model was suitable and they said they don't do this any more. Neither do Canon.

                    Have fallen foul of the 10 minute edit rule (didn't seem that amount of time had passed). The following should have appeared in the last post;

                    At the moment we have the USB from the printer connected into the router which allows for wi-fi printing but the scanner will not work this way. To scan, I have to unplug the USB from the router and plug it into the back of the pc base unit. As I have problems with arthritis and sciatica, it's a pain in the rear (and the knees LOL) to keep swopping over. That's why I wanted a fully wi-fi all in one with a slide carrier but no joy.

                      GallowayLass, The Canon Pixma MG 8250 can scan slides & negatives, it can print direct on to DVD/CD & it has wifi.

                        Thanks for this Nighryder. I got really bogged down in their website last year trying to use their printer chooser module and drew a blank so I emailed them and luke Epson they said their current models didn't do slides. Will go see if I can find a good price.

                          Drat! This printer is no longer available to purchase. There not even old stock on eBay or anything on Gumtree.

                            There are a few printers that have a facility to scan/print slides, but they are really expensive, so unless you have a repeated need to do this, it would be a waste of money. The printer business has moved away from this as an option in a lot of cases because of the lack of need/sales.
                            You are looking for what the trade calls Photo Scanners

                            Though it shows the prices in USD, you can see what I mean from the latest reviews in PC World Magazine

                            Epson perfection V550 has the capability to scan film
                            Browse Ebuyer's range of Flatbed Scanners. Top brands including HP, Epson, Fujitsu & more. Great prices and free delivery.

                              Thats disappointing its no longer available, the other option would be to buy just a slide & negative scanner, theres a few available now with colour preview screen, you can buy them for less than $100.

                                A possibly temporary but cheap solution, if you have a nrmally empty USB socket on the back of the base unit, would be to plug in a USB extension cable and make the socket more easily accessible.

                                  Gallowaylass, Assuming you only want each slide scanned once it might be more cost effective to have them done commercially than find a printer, scanner?
