I am looking for any information on the above.
All I know is that he worked on a railway in India, had three children (1916, 1917 and 1918) then brought them and his wife? (can't find a marriage record) to Reading in the 1930s. As far as I know he then returned, alone, to India.
I guess he had some railway employment in England before he went to India. I guess he would have been borne around 1880. I guess he would have left the UK after 1900.
I am, at present, looking through 1901 census; lots of pages as I have no idea where he was borne.

Ian, can you give the names of the three children - providing they are deceased. Do you have copies of their birth certificates?

Hi Elaine,
I have not asked for birth certificates as yet.
NAMES:
Elizabeth Wood, later Pickup then Cowley. DOB 1916
James Joseph Wood (my father) DOB 1917
George Wood DOB 1918
My aunt had a baby that died in infancy. So I am the only grandson from that line.
All now deceased. All born at St Thomas in Bombay.
I believe my grandmother was May Isobel Wood. Maiden name Lipersonne?

Looking at the British India Office records on Findmypast for a possible marriage, but nothing showing.

Worth bearing in mind these name variants which have come up as I searched - La Personne / La Persoune / Lapersonne

Have you tried contacting the India Office British Library who seem to hold Railway employment records?

On the incoming passenger list he gives his address as 10 Ardyche Street, Stockport, Cheshire. - occupation Signal Inspector.

I've been trying to follow up this one -
John William Wood born 1884 Cheshire, occ. Engineer fitter .. but not getting anywhere with him after 1911.

If it helps any - 1911 census - from the image and on FMP his birthplace is Willaston, Cheshire not Wollaston.

On that 1911 census there is also a Harold James Wood b Thames Ditton a boarder with John William.

Here they are both with their parents on 1901 census:

Having trouble finding a possible marriage! :(

Katarzyna

Yes, me too. Perhaps they never married?
I searched the India records on FMP and zilch.
The children's birth certs should give mother's maiden name.
If he married somewhere in UK between 1911 and 1916 her mn will help nail him.
He could be William - as in the passenger list, John William or just John Wood/Woods :(

Elaine,
Thanks for your help, wonderful!!

My mother did not get on with my paternal grandmother so I only remember seeing her 4 times in my life, twice she saw and spoke to me on a bus I must have been about 11, then I saw her at my father's funeral. I worked for British Gas and I called at a house to find my grandmother was the occupant. She recognised me.
My grandfather was not discussed but my mother gave me the names of my paternal grandparents and said that my grandfather "settled the family" then returned to India.
I found the births on find my past and contacted British library for the other details. They could find no marriage details for my grand parents.

Many thanks to you all. I was totally stuck on this one.
My grandmother was Indian so I guess they would have been married in India, no record of a marriage at British Library.
I am using find my past and wonder if I would do better with Ancestry. Any views?
Once again many, many thanks
Ian Wood

Personally I would use FMP for India records.

One of our members Clematised (Edna) seems to know quite a bit about India records - I'll send her a message and ask her to read this thread to see if she can help.

Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you but I have been having a look for your names and so far not come up with anything helpful so you can join the India List here http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/IND/INDIA.html and join by clicking on this link
INDIA-L-request@rootsweb.com adding the word Subscribe nothing else then once you have received notifications you can send them a message asking for the information you need, there are lots of knowledgeable people there who may be able to help you.

Good Luck
