I am looking for information on the Wood family, particularly the parents of Joshua Wood (b. 1796, Birmingham, Warwickshire). His father was Thomas Wood and his mother Sarah. I have two marriage entries for Thomas: one to Sarah Birt, the other to Sarah Whitehouse. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Still confused
Thomas Wood married Sarah Birt 24 August 1795 (St. Martin, Birmingham). The other marriage was Thomas Wood to Sarah Whitehouse, 14 October, 1793 (St. Martin, Birmingham). Joshua was born in 1796 (and baptized St. Martin, Birmingham). Not sure where to go from here. But thank you for the marriage entry.

Unfortunately there seems to two Sarah's and Thomas' having children baptised in Birmingham at the same time. One set of children St Phillips, the other St Martin,
There are some witnesses to the marriages which may separate them but not sure how as there are no occupations given in these old records so far. Joshua was a Bedstead maker I think.
Will look up those marriages again in case you don't have them.

Thanks, Vera. I'm not sure about the witnesses, either. Could Francis Wood be a brother of Thomas? Since I don't have the names of Thomas' parents -- and I'm not sure how to find them -- I may have reached a dead end. Joshua was a Bedstead Maker. He died in 1861. The family lived on Sherlock Street. Would the fact that one family was married/had their children at St. Martin/St. Phillips be a factor?Last edited by jackie.hubbard; 24-05-15, 19:40.

I'm not to sure about the older records and how to get further back. Perhaps a request to the local Record Office or Family History Society might give some ideas of what other records may give further information on Joshua.
Francis could be father or brother. I would say that it is more likely that the marriage/baptisms relate to that set of parents but then can't be 100 percent without further evidence.
I wonder if there is anything re the death/burial of Joshua in 1861. Cemetery records or memorial stone which may indicate name of his father.

Hi Vera. Thanks for the suggestion. I will contact the Family History Society (I assume they are on the internet). I believe Joshua's father's name was Thomas and his mother's, Sarah. I haven't been able to find anything that proves if Thomas married Sarah Birt or Sarah Whitehouse, but perhaps the Family History Society can give me an idea on where to go. I'll keep you posted.Last edited by jackie.hubbard; 25-05-15, 01:47.

I have just found a record of a Joshua Wood, christened St. Martin, father Francis Wood, mother Rebecca. The Thomas Wood who married Sarah Whitehouse on 1793 had a Francis Wood as a witness. Joshua Wood, christened 12 July 1796, St. Martin. Parents Thomas Wood and Sarah. Grasping at straws, but now learning toward Sarah Birt.

Doing this from memory Jackie for now. I looked at that Joshua with father Francis and mother Rebecca. That Joshua was born 1786 and did not fit with the census age for the Joshua married to Martha.
EDIT
Other children born to Francis and Rebecca were Francis b 1789, Thomas b 1791, Joseph b 1792 and James 1781.
I wondered if Francis Wood was an uncle of Joshua. I looked for a marriage of Francis and Rebecca for any relevant witnesses but could not find one.
Off to check my jottings.

It is difficult to separate the two Thomas and Sarah's other than the different church for baptism St Martin/St Philip. Both appear to have had many children. Had hoped to be able to find a mother's maiden name somewhere amongst the names but not sure that was the done thing then.
Saw a burial for Joshua at Warstone Lane Cemetery, Keyhill, Handsworth, Birmingham aka Brookfields and Mint Cemetery. Do you have that record? If not wonder if the burial record may give some clues as to parentage or occupation.

Hi Vera:
I wonder if St. Martin is more relevant than I thought. Thomas Wood married at St. Martin. Joshua Wood was baptized at St. Martin. Joshua Wood and Martha Dewsbury married at St. Martin. Ann, daughter of Joshua and Martha was baptized at St. Martin. In the 1851 Census, Joshua and Martha are in the sub-registration district of St. Martin. The death entry for Joshua Wood (1861) lists Joshua as a Bedstead Maker/Master. Present at the death: son John Wood. The residence at the time was Sherlock Street, in the sub-district of St. Martin. (You're right. This is the Joshua Wood buried in Warstone Lane Cemetary.) In the 1861 and 1871 Census, widow Martha Wood is living in the sub-registration district of St. Martin. I wouldn't have thought of this, by the way, without your help. Thanks. I am currently looking for a Thomas Wood, c. 1776 and a Sarah Birt or Whitehouse born St. Martin. Not sure if I'm on the right track. Let me know what you think.
