Thorpe, Jay, Gillingham and Day families Suffolk

Hi everyone, thank you for all the help in the past I have been researching our family tree for a while now but need some help please. I am researching the names, Thorpe, Steer, Jay, Gillingham and Day mostly. They all lived in the Suffolk areas mostly as farm labourers or in domestic service. My father's family Thorpe mostly lived in Witnesham, Steer originated in Sussex some mention of the Petworth Workhouse. Jays lived Akenham, Grundisburgh and surrounding areas, Gillinghams from Ipswich and Day in Witnesham/Westerfield. My father, Frederick Samuel Thorpe born 1919 Ipswich, his mother Elizabeth Caroline Steer born 1885 Horsham Sussex, father John or Frederick John Thorpe born 1879 Witnesham. My Mother, Vera Mary Day Thorpe born 1916 Westerfield, her mother Hilda Emma Gillingham born 1898 Ipswich and father Harold William Day born 1898 Ipswich.

I am struggling to find details for my paternal grandfather and his parents. I have located some information on my paternal grandmother but sketchy details for her parents and grandparents. Any help appreciated or the best sources to research. I've tried all the usual resources so don't know if there are any good workhouse records anywhere or other resources I could try?

My main problems throughout my research is finding birth, marriage and death actual dates so I can request certificates to check I have the correct information. Thank you again for any help and advice. Emmie x

so Elizabeth Caroline apparently did not marry John Thorpe until 1918

It does look as though your paternal grandmother was illegitimate.
