  • Name help please

    Hi, can anyone possibly make out what Elizabeth's maiden name is please? It looks like Findlay to me but I can't find any matching marriages.

    Could be Findlay or Tindlay. Do you have an approximate date/place of marriage?

        Scotland and I got the names from their son's marriage to Elizabeth Black, also called John which happened on the 29th Dec 1899 in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland and he was 23 at the time of the marriage. I've had their image saved for quite a while now but it's only because my Great Uncle (their Great Grandson) is wishing to focus on his Dad's side that I thought I'd take a look at it all again.

          Not sure if it's the right family, but there are some entries on Family Search where the parents are given as John Vickers and Elizabeth Finlay/Findlay

            The names & years match don't they? Wonder why I couldn't get it up on Scotlands people when searching their names?

              Ireland- that's possibly why. I got a hint on ancestry for a tree which shows them as being Irish.

                    John & Eliza Vickers in the Scottish 1861 Census on Ancestry show that they both come from Ireland with 2 toddlers born there, the next census shows Ireland with more kids, one of whom is named John as does the next one as well.

                      The only John and Eliza Vickers that I found on ancestry 1861 Scotland census are living at 9 Byrchill Row, Kilwinning. They were both born in Ireland but the 2 sons Samuel and William were born in Kilwinning. Is that the same address you had?

                          I can't find any match in 1871 in UK but in 1881 the same family are at Burnbank Road Factory Building, Hamilton. Possibly the 1861 census Samuel has died as there's another son of that name?

                          Children are;
                          William 20 born Kilwinning
                          Elizabeth 17 born Stevenston
                          Joseph 13 born Kilwinning
                          Margaret 11 Hurlford
                          John 7 born Galston
                          Mary 5 born Galston
                          Samuel 3 born Galston

                          In 1891 John and Elizabeth Vickers and family are at 20a Ann Street, Hamilton. There is now a Caterine who was not on 1881 census and is roughly the same age as the child Margaret in 1881.
                          Children are;
                          Joseph 23 born Ayr
                          Caterine 20 (no relationship given in the transcription) born West Calder, Lark (sic). Possibly meaning Lanarkshire which is wrong as West Calder is in West Lothian
                          John 19 born Galston
                          Samuel 12 born Galston

                          In all three censuses, John is a coal miner.

                          I don't see either John snr. or his wife in Scotland after 1891

                          The places of birth for the children make me think the 1856 Stevenston marriage could well be correct for your John's parents.
