  • Sinah - does anyone know where this first name comes from?

I thought it came from Wales but is apparently not Welsh.
    Indian is my second guess.
Does anyone know the origin of this name?

Female Meaning:God is gracious. * Meaning pending review Origin:Irish Gender:Girl

This is all Google says. If you check out the 1881 census there are quite a lot of them. Interestingly mainly frm Shropshire Welsh border, even though it says above that the origin is Irish.

Definitely Sinah and not Dinah? I can see a certain style of capital S looking like a capital D to an unwary transcriber.

Thanks Ian. There is certainly no Swiss connection but I am told it is Irish. I had always thought it was a name like Mahalla i.e. people who had been in India came home with these names - Sinah is one I have seen from India also. Quite happy to settle for Irish (or anything else).

OC - haven't seen it handwritten - only printed on FSOrg from Welsh Parish Registers.
