  • Need help finding information on a US soldier.

    Hi all,

I would like some help finding information on a US soldier. With the stories down the family line etc and with information found on familysearch.org today, i have found a few more pieces to the puzzle.

My maternal great aunt Ellen B Cunnington born 1922 Islington was seeing this US Serviceman and turns out she married him Sept Qtr 1945 Islington. However, i don't think this lasted as it looks like he went back to America and i think the marriage was annulled in 1948. I found Ellen on the London Electoral Registers living with her older sister before her death in 1962.

The US soldier that married Ellen was Alex J Boros. (According to FamilySearch.org) There was an Alex J Boros born 1923 in Ohio and died 1995 in Ohio. On doing a free search on Ancestry.com the search brings up Ohio census returns from 1930 and 1940, a 1995 Death index, an Ohio marriage and also a match for US World War II Army Enlistment Records. This information may help to put some more pieces to the puzzle and learn more about him and see more into my Great Aunt's life.

Thanks for any help or information in advance.

There seems to be plenty of information out there such as

But the first thing that strikes me is have you obtained the marriage certificate, that should give you his approximate dob and then you'll know whether you are dealing with right person.

And father's name, which would help with census searches.

Thanks you for all your replies. Apologies for the delay, i celebrated my 40th on Saturday, had a surprise party and it was surprise to say the least.

Hi Phil, yes i had already seen that page on geni.com and have bookmarked it for now until the marriage certificate arrives, which has been ordered so as soon as i receive in the post i will update this thread with the information. The link to the enlistment information on Alex J Boros is also on familysearch website.

Hi Val, the information i found was from a google search on my great aunts name and found an extract from a newspaper article from Tuesday February 24th 1948 of the Elyria Chronicle. Elyria i looked up on google is in the county of Lorain, Ohio which on the information i found on familysearch of Alex J Boros they say he was from. So just waiting patiently for the certificate to arrive to know either way.

Hi Janet, Yes, the marriage cert will list will list the name of his father which should match up with the information i have. But if it doesn't at least i have the starting information for the person i am trying to find.

Thank you for the birthday wishes Elaine and for the link. However, i only have a premium ancestry account and ancestry won't allow me to view the record.

Still waiting for the certificate of the marriage but thanks for the 1948 newspaper article Elaine. This proves that my findings were correct that it was the divorce notice of my great aunt. The article shows that Alex J Boros did file for divorce back in Ohio whilst she was still living in Holloway, London. This fills in the gap from the London Electoral Register using her married Boros name living with her sister but by 1949, still living with her sister (and sisters 2nd husband), using her maiden name of Cunnington. This is also ties up why she was Cunnington not Boros when she died in 1962.

                      Update...

Their marriage certificate finally come today. Alex J(ohn) Boros married my great aunt Ellen Beatrice Cunnington in Islington in 1945. The certificate lists that he is in the US army and that he is from Lorain Country, Ohio. The age listed matches him being born in 1923. The witnesses are both known to me also.

Couple of references on http://newspaperarchive.com but it's a subscription site. Gleaned this much from the search results for his address and employment:
                        March 10, 1967 - Alex J. Boros, 43, of 2410 East 34th St., Lorain, crane operator
                        April 20, 1977 - Alex J. Boros, 53, of 1031 Tower Blvd., Apt 204, Lorain, diesel mechanic

Unless, of course, you already knew this.

Thank you Keldon. No i didn't know that. I only knew that he married my great aunt, a US Soldier, details from familysearch plus what i had recently found on the free search on the petition for divorce which Elaine so kindly helped out as this was on Ancestry.
