  • Minnie Sharpe - my brick wall

    Could anyone please try and help me find the birth of Minnie Sharpe, here's what I already know;

    She married Samuel Henry Baker on the 21st September 1876 at Wellingore Parish Church (Lincolnshire). Copy of marriage certificate below;

    As you can see, the fathers name is 'Not known, supposed to be dead' which isn't very much use! However, she states her age as 18 which makes her birth date approximately 1858.

    The 1881 census shows her living in Grantham Road, Welbourn, Lincolnshire. Her age is shown as 21 (birth ~1860) place of birth 'Unknown'.
    The 1891 and 1901 census' are the same.
    She dies on the 16 July 1907 in Welbourn aged 49 (birth ~1859).

    She had a son before she got married (birth 31st January 1876 in the Union Workhouse, Sleaford). Copy below;

    And I managed to find a newspaper clipping related to this

    Try as I might though, I cannot find a birth for her so any assistance anyone can give would be very much appreciated.

    In 1871 at Timberland there is a Minnie Sharp aged 9 as a Visitor, stated to be born at Lincoln.
    This is an approximate year of birth of 1862, so rather late, but worth bearing in mind.

          As an aside, its also 'interesting' that Samuel Henry Baker declares his father to be Mary Baker! Leaving the option open for Minnie to give her mother's name. Perhaps she didn't know that either, poor girl.

            Many thanks for the replies ladies, the 1871 census is a possibility as Minnies first daughter (b 17 September 1877) was Florence Wright Baker.

                  couldn't spot them in 1841 yet, but was looking to see if they had other children that could possibly be Minnies mother, or maybe it was a sibling to Jane that was Minnies mother.. just seems odd that no parent seems to be around

                              Thanks Elaine for all your help, I tried working forwards from Mary Sharpe but I think it's a dead end. Here's what I found;
                              Mary Sharpe married Robert Clay on the 25/09/1834 at Welbourn (Robert Clay was from Wellingore).

                              1841 census - Wellingore
                              Robert Clay 34 Ag Lab
                              Mary Clay 35
                              Thomas Clay 5
                              Francis Clay 3

                              1851 Census - Wellingore
                              Robert Clay 44 born South Rauceby
                              Mary Clay 45 born Ashby De La Launde
                              Francis Clay 13 born Wellingore

                              1861 Census - Wellingore
                              Robert Clay 53 - Groundkeeper
                              Mary Clay 55
                              Francis Clay 23 - Farm Servant
                              Thomas Newton 17 - Servant

                              1871 Census - Wellingore
                              Robert Clay 62 Farm Bailiff
                              Mary Clay 65
                              Thomas Clay 35 (unmarried Son)
                              William H Winter 18 servant
                              Mary J Hunt 14 servant

                              1881 Census - Wellingore
                              Robert Clay 73
                              Mary Clay 75
                              Thomas Clay 45

                              Mary Clay was buried in Wellingore on the 22/03/1887 (aged 81)
                              Robert Clay was buried in Wellingore on the 03/10/1887 (aged 79)

                              Thomas Clay moved away from home before 1851 (the 1861 census shows him as an unmarried servant (a Carter) in Skinnard) and returned before 1871.
                              Francis Clay was unmarried and died age 26 (buried 08/11/1863 in Wellingore)

                              I thought that there may have been a possible link between Francis Clay and Minnie Sharpe (unmarried man has child out of wedlock, something happens to the mother and the child adopts the grandmothers maiden name) bur I can find no evidence for this whatsoever. I think it's a case of my imagination getting carried away!
