  • Jeams(?) Rayner

Elias and Ann Rayner had a son baptised 2.11.1777 at Womenswold, St Margaret. His Christian name has been transcribed by FMP as Jeams and that is what it looks like. I have never heard of this name although google throws up one or two examples.

    1) If you can access the original record do you agree with the transcription?
    2) Do you think that Jeams is correct or is it a mis-spelt James?

On the original it appears to be JEAMS as stated.

At first glance it looks like Jeams on the original, but the ret of the Js on that image are not that similar to the first letter. On the other hand, the spelling is a little eccentric - dater for daughter as an example - and there is a "Jams" on the next page.

There is also a death duty register entry for Elias Rayner in 1828, granting administration to James Rayner of Waldershare (which isn't far from Womenswold).

There is also a burial in 1840 of James Rayner at Waldershare aged 62 - looks like your man.

Thanks all. I am now convinced he was called James.
