  • Help with a will please.

Trying to decipher this will from 1654 - my 9x Great Grandfather.

    http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/51...1_310699-00496

He mentions a number of children, and then at the end says he has 8, but I can only find the names of seven - Charles, Arthur, John, Mary, Joseph, Deborah and Susanna. Can anyone find the missing one, and for a bonus point, which wife had which child.

    Many thanks
    Linda

    The missing child is Elizabeth.
Charles & Arthur are from 1st wife & Joseph from the 2nd.
Still trying to work out the others.

It says he has eight children by his last wife.

He mentions daughters Anne & Joanne/a.

Thanks Moggie - so maybe there were 10 - Charles and Arthur from wife no 1, and John, Mary, Joseph, Deborah, Susannah, Elizabeth Anne and Joanne/a from his second wife, Anne.

He seemed to have had a lot of property to bequeath.

At least he mentions my 8x Great Grandfather!

I've been through the will twice & I can't see a daughter Susanna mentioned. Is she on page 1 or 2 ? Can you point out on what line she is mentioned?

On page 2 there is a note scribbled in the margin that that I think reads

And I do give and bequeath to my daughter Susanna Liscombe 3 acres of land..... (having trouble with the rest of it)

I enlarged the page too much & missed that bit.
So I think that accounts for all of his children.
Sometimes the wills made in the interregnum years when most parish registers weren't kept can help piece a family together.

Thanks Moggie and Phil, now to try and trace some of the above-mentioned children.

This could be the 2nd marriage of Arthur to Ann. http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin...f=15&ml_rpos=1

Wonderful Moggie, that certainly fits perfectly, especially as he was talking about his children attaining the age of 15.
