  • Meaning of "incloth" day

I have googled but cannot find any reference to it - all I can find is ref to nappies!

I am transcribing marriages and I have two on the same page.

Married in this church by Banns this Incloth Day of Febry 1807

and the other - by licence this Incloth Day of July 1807

    Never seen that before.

How odd. At first glance I thought it said twelfth .... Perhaps it does? It certainly looks like Incloth though!

You could well be right Anne. The date is between the 1st and 17th Feb. The other more difficult - between 31 Mar and 27th July.
The vicar's writing is abominable. he uses an e for an a all the time - as in Mery (Mary), Perish (Parish) Benns (Banns). and it's always Banjemin! I shall be glad when he is replaced

Could this be some local regional term. Where are the marriages?

          These are Tollesbury in Essex.

I read it as Twelfth, too.

Actually, I read it as Tweloth, lol, which might fit with his idiosyncratic spelling.

I'm another who thinks it could be 12th.

Is anyone transcribing the corresponding BT/ATs? (Would be interesting to see if that had a numeric entry.)

Yes, thanks all. I do agree but as the vicar normally wrote the date as a numeral Incloth hit me straight away and then I couldn't see it any other way lol. The SEAX images are all parish records - no B or AT's (For Tollesbury that is. It does for some other parishes). Family search doesn't have Tollesbury either.
