  • Hi new from Canada

Is it to big a statement to say that all the Bowes in Durham are related

Welcome to the Forum Stuart, and good luck with your research. Not sure how to prove/disprove the statement re the Bowes - its a fairly uncommon name which perhaps increases the likelihood of being related albeit very distantly but a}surnames have a habit of changing overtime so some of the Bowes may descend from Bowens, others from Bowers or Boughs or....., and b) Durham is/was a relatively large centre of population and one to which people have migrated from other parts of the country so families of similar name may not be related at all.

Welcome to FTF! I do a couple of One Name studies and find them very interesting. You would need to make lists (databases) of all events concerning Bowes in County Durham and start building their trees to see if they do all connect. I find it great fun! You can make your study public by joining the Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS) or just do it for your own private satisfaction.

You are probably aware that there is a place called Bowes, which at least some if them may originate from. Place name surnames do tend to have quite a few separate families using them. "William from Bowes" would have applied to a number of people.
Good luck with your research and don't forget there are lots of people on here willing to discuss ideas.

The late Queen Mother was Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon by birth, so perhaps you may turn out to be well connected!
