New online will and probate index

There is now a searchable will and probate service via directgov from 1996 to the present

https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

Seems to be very up to date - my mother's is on there and probate was only granted in 6 weeks ago. It also gives the date of death.

Copies cost £10 and it looks as though you receive it online.

Although it says UK, I think its only England and Wales. I believe there are plans to go further back eventually.

I've just popped in after a long absence. Worth mentioning that it also gives the exact date of death, which you wouldn't get from the death index.
