I am searching for birth, marriage, and death information about my gggrandmother, Margaret van Etten Hoffman b. abt 1796 in New York state. Her husband, Connradt Hoffman died in 1832 and is buried in Phelps, New York. They had three children, Mary Ann, Sarah Ann, and Charles H. Margaret later had another daughter, Helen of unknown father. We have positively identified Margaret in the U.S. censuses from 1850,1860,1870 and possibly in 1840. In 1870 she was living with her daughter, Sarah (Sally) Hammond in Novi, Oakland, Michigan.

I forgot to mention that in some records Margaret is listed as having been born in New Jersey instead of New York. Also that Helen's married name was Finch. I will now list the census urls.

I still think that you need to find records on the Michigan side. Unfortunately, not all records are online (some say less than 10% of gen records are).
I frequently use familysearch's catalog to get clues where to look. There's only two records listed for Novi, and I don't think either will help your search. There are many records listed for Oakland Co.

I'd be especially interested in the county history

IF your family was interviewed, it may provide great detail about them (but more likely about Mr. Hammond than his wife or mother-in-law!). I've seen lengthy family histories in some of these biographies (e.g., listing the grandfather's parents and all the sibs). If Margaret came from a RevWar patriot's family (quite possible), the writer may have copied lots of info about her.
Another direction would be to try to find an obituary for her. I don't know where to find local papers, but if you look at the memorial page for her daughter, it's clear that some of the info came from an obituary - the newspapers must exist.Last edited by PhotoFamily; 28-09-14, 16:29.

Thank you for the tips. There's a lot of stuff to go through. Who knows where it might lead. It is disappointing that only %10 of the records are available on line. I was told by the people at my computer club that others are steadily plugging away and increasing access. Right now I can't possibly go to Michigan myself. Maybe in the future if it seems like it would be worthwhile. I had the browser do a search in the books for "Huffman" no hits and "Hoffman" no useful references.Last edited by Daniel; 28-09-14, 17:18.

Most familysearch films can be loaned to your nearest family history center for a small fee.
You can page thru the books that I sent links to - I think the earlier one is your best bet. As Detroit became the big city in Oakland county, there will be decreasing info about the small people around the county in the history books. Sometimes there are indexes of names, sometimes of townships - that might speed up your perusal.
You might look for a Michigan/Oakland GenSoc - they may know how to find newspapers - and someone may do a lookup for you!

I think that we checked before and unfortunately discovered that there is no family history center in Holland. I will look through the books but have already discovered that there are no references to anyone I recognize with the surname "Huffman" or "Hoffman". But they might lead to other useful sources. I will see if I can locate a GenSoc that can help me.

So far I have contacted the Oakland County Genealogical Society which has referred me to the Famington Genealogical Society who has referred me to the Novi Public Library. Hopefully they will be able to locate an obituary for Margaret.

I may be grasping at straws but I just found this interesting record for Mary A. Chapman. Ellen Rice told me that she thought that Margaret and Connradt may have had another daughter who married someone called Chapman. In Connradt's will he speaks of Mary Ann Hoffman as being his daughter. What is interesting about this record is that there are people with the surname Ostrander living in the household. Ida Finch, daughter of Helen, half sister of Mary, married Edgar S. Ostrander.

I am afraid that I just struck out at the library in Novi,Michigan.
Dear Mr. Strang,
Thank you for your inquiry about Margaret Hoffman. There is a neighboring community (Northville) that at the time of the 1870s had the local newspaper. I checked the archives of the paper for Margaret Hoffman but did not find any entries. Also, I looked through Ancestry.com to see if I could find Margaret’s date of death but there was no information there either. I am sorry to end your search here but I couldn’t find any further information.
Sincerely,
Suzanne Carpenter
I think that Margaret must have died somewhere else. I wonder if she went to live with another relative or something.Last edited by Daniel; 02-10-14, 23:36.

I have been trying to figure out if there is a connection between the Ostranders listed in the 1850 census with Mary A. Chapman have any connection with Edgar Sheridan Ostrander. However There are some discrepancies in the records.
In the Illinois death register we find Ida and Edgar. His parents are named as Daniel Ostrander and Mary Babcock.
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/s...iv=1&ml_rpos=1
But in the 1900 census Edgar's parents are listed as Phillip and Louisa Ostrander. His spouse Ida is also listed here so it must be the same person.

Until I know for sure I can't really make more progress along this line.

In a list of Conrad and Margaret's children Ellen wrote:
Sarah (Aunt Sally) m. Harrison Hammond (Sr.)
Helen m. George Finch
another girl? possibly married a Chapman
She lists Lucinda as one of Sarah and Harrison Hammond's children but doesn't go into who she married. I suppose that she could have been mistaken but you never know. I am just trying to find some evidence of Mary Ann other than in Connradt's will.

In the records that you quote there are two widely differing birth dates for Lucinda 1838 and 1846. I wonder how that happened. In other sources she is listed as having been born in New York not Michigan.
Lucinda's mother was Sarah who we know was a "Hoffman". It's Helen who was born after Connradt's death.

It is interesting that, at least in this tree, Edgar's father, Daniel Ostrander, had four wives one of which was Mary Ellen Chapman. But there is no information about her parents. Edgar's mother here is Mary Babcock.
