  • Missing in Leicester

John Draycott b. 1818 in Leicester d 1880, married Mary Tetley b.1820 d 1878, and they had 7 children, all born in Leicester:

    Ann Tetley 1841
    William 1842
    John 1844
    Mary Ann 1846
    Susanna 1854
    Samuel 1856
    Sarah Ann 1858.

Ann Tetley married Thomas Matts and had 5 children, but vanished after 1871, along with the rest of her family.
Sarah Ann had an illegitimate daughter (Mary) in 1880, then vanished.
Samuel, I think died in 1887 in Leicester.

I can find no trace of any of the other children . Can anyone help trace this family?
    Linda

Thanks - I had most of those details, but it is interesting to see that William was one of the witnesses - proves he was still alive in 1866!

Looks like they baptised them in batches doesn't it.

Ooh, that's interesting - The Draycotts have an Elizabeth baptised in 1864, but I had not found one with them up to 1871. However, Ann Tetley and Thomas Matts had a daughter Elizabeth, born before their marriage in 1863 who would match. Wonder if they told a little porky to the Vicar, as Ann was still single when the baptism took place.

                Thanks Lass

The marriage to Thomas Townsend looks very good - and I notice that in 1881 there is a Mary E Draycott, b 1863 who is boarding with them. Wonder if that is the Elizabeth Mary Draycott (Matts) from above?

Thanks so much - the Draycott deaths were very useful, as that means that I can account for most of the family - I think I have found William in 1911, in the workhouse, a former pavior.

I wonder who was the parent of Arthur Highton Draycott - wonder if it was another one for Sarah Ann. Is Highton a clue to the father maybe as the name is not in the family previously?

There was an inquest into Samuel's death in the newspaper

                                Leicester Chronicle 16 April 1887

On Sunday he had been to Donnington Le heath to visit his wife's sister, Monday his wife left for work and when she returned home, he had died whilst getting out of bed; death due to natural causes.
Resided 21 Grosvenor Street Age 30

Was hoping for a happier outcome

He could possibly have married one of these 2 ladies 1884

Thanks again Elaine - shames they didn't mention the wifes name in the newspaper article.

LL - if you could look up a burial for me, for Edward Woolley who died on 20 aug 1846 aged 80. I have all the details of the death, but am trying to trace his birth, and if he was buried in a family grave it might help. I think he lived on Brick Street, but the writing on the cert. is very difficult to read.

                                        Thanks
