I am trying to locate information about my gggrand parents who supposedly emigrated to the U.S. around 1800 from Amsterdam. Unfortunately, I have very little to go on except family hearsay and the marriage license of their son, Charles (my great grand father) in the U.S. I also know the names of two more of their children who were born in the U.S., Helen and Sarah. We know their birth and death dates from gravestones. I have already consulted the National Dutch and Amsterdam archives without success as well as sources in the U.S. Does anybody have a suggestion?

Hi Daniel,
Have you had a look here http://www.familytreeforum.com/conte...he-Netherlands on our Reference Library for any sites you might not be aware of.
Also familysearch.org has lots of records from around the world and may be able to help.
Not sure when they started but Ellis Island records are about immigrants to USA.
No doubt someone else on here will have some more/better suggestions.
Margaret

Welcome to The Forum. I have had a look at www.familysearch.org where there are a few options for a Conrad Hoffmann. The dates don't quite match but worth a look.................couldn't see anything for Margaret van Etten though.

In Ancestry.co.uk there is in Public Member Trees a history of Johannes Van Etten 1710-1791 and somewhere down the line is mention of a Margaret but the name van Etten has become Americanised so it becomes Vanattan. There may be no connection but the name exists in the States.

On the Dutch forum stamboomforum.nl someone has been able to find my ggrandfather, Charles Huffman. On that document it states that both his parents were born in New York. If this is accurate then I would be interested in pursuing my gggrandmother's family back to the Dutch roots. However, the document doesn't give any further information about my ggrandparents so the search is still on.

Locating all the BMD certificates for all family members, as well as obits, may aid your search. Any idea where in NY the US born children were born? Where were they living in the census?
Unfortunately, early certs did not have as much info as later ones, but birth certs would include names of parents (maybe even MMN) and maybe their places of birth. If you can find your g'g'grandparents' death certs, the same may also be true. If they lived in a small town, an obituary may be a treasure trove.
You can post the names of relatives who are no longer living - perhaps we can find something for you? Even knowing more details of where could help to give you pointers.
Welcome to FTF!

I get BMD but what is MMN? I would love to find the birth, death, and marriage certificates but so far they have eluded me. Every time I want to see a document I get an add from somebody that wants me to pay them. I don't mind doing that once in a while but first I want to know if they have anything I need.
I learned today at the computer meeting how to make a GEDCOM file. I will try to post that soon. You are welcome to any information I have. Of course it's a work in progress. For now I will say that Margaret and Conrad had at least three children, my grandfather, Charles, and two sisters Helen and Sarah. I have their dates and husband's names but there is no further information about the parents. Sarah and Charles were both born in New York and, since their parents were also born there, so was I assume Helen. Charles wife's name was Phebe (Phoebe, Phoebie) Arch.

US Federal Census records rarely give more than the state name for Place of Birth (POB) (unless foreign-born, then name of country).
Individual census records will usually have the name of the town or district across the top. Addresses themselves didn't appear until the 1900. Even if the individual record sheet doesn't have the area name, it may be inferred by the order it appears in the records. The database that it came from (e.g., Ancestry or FamilySearch) will probably tell you.
Posting a gedcom to FTF will put the names, DOBs POBs into the database, but not show the relationship between them (it's a name database, useful for connecting to people who are also researching those names)
You are welcome to post the family's basic, known info on this thread. Also, you could post links to the census records that you have for them.
US research often involves site-specific resources. Connecting with people who know that locale may reveal those resources.
"I don't mind doing that once in a while but first I want to know if they have anything I need."
Good luck with that! We've all bought certs that didn't have info we wanted, or were for the wrong people. But yes, you need to pick and choose where you spend your research $$.

For what it's worth I have now uploaded my GEDCOM. The people on the Dutch forum found the records and then posted them on that site. I am not sure if I can copy them that easily. This is getting a bit complicated. I suppose that I could first copy them to a separate file and then copy them again onto this site.
I meant that every time I get to where I think there might be some information then I have to pay before I can see it. This seems to be the case even though I have signed up for Ancestry.com's free trial package. I'm getting really sick of this. Also there isn't always the possibility to go directly to the entry you need. I can't seem to find the search function on Google Chrome.

I found the following links for Charles Huffman. Right now the original site is offline.
"United States Census, 1860," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MWDL-1Y5
"United States Census, 1870," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MXX6-VZL
"United States Census, 1880," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MHSX-68M
I sent another anwer earlier but it doesn't seem to appear here for some reason. In it I gave more information.
