I don't know if anyone can help with this but here is the story so far.
John Atherton, married in 1893 age given as 21, at the parish church of St. Andrew in Manchester, a boiler maker, father, James Atherton boiler maker. He married Mary Elizabeth Hickey, age given as 19, father, William Hickey labourer.
On the 1901 census they are living in N.W. Manchester (Ancoats) with their first 2 daughters. Both places of birth are Manchester. I have found on the 1891 census John Atherton with his family, father James and mother Emma, aged 17 and an apprentice boiler maker. Mary Elizabeth I cannot find on the 1891 and the ones I have looked at don't have the right father.
On the 1911 only Mary Elizabeth and by now 5 daughters are listed the youngest being Minnie who is aged 2 born in 1908.
I don't seem to be able to find the missing John Atherton on the 1911. I have looked at the possibility of him joining the army reserve but these seem to be dead ends, also criminal records but cannot find anything definite. I can't find a death for that period, and possibly he was alive and kicking as Mary Elizabeth listed herself as married on the 1911. The family story is that he just walked out and his children never remembered him. So did he just abandon them?
