I am new to this group so please forgive me if I am posting this on the wrong page. I am trying to find some births for my Gt Grandma Margaret Gargan. Possibly born between 1858 and 1864. Also her siblings Fanny and Ellen. All possibly born in Warwickshire. Their Father was John Gargan. No name for Mother. They lived in Birmingham. Mostly Aston. Margaret married Edward Moore 1877. Ellen married William Hughes 1873. Fanny didnt marry and died in Aston Workhouse 1897. The family originally believed to be from Ireland but only going on word of mouth. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

This appears to be your first post at all... so welcome to FTF!
You seem to have a bit of info about your tree at that point, so presumably, you've wisely been "keeping to the rules" and worked your way back systematically with certificates and censuses.
GARGAN is an unusual name in England - which has two effects - [1] there won't be many listed when you search a database and [2] because it's unusual, it's also unexpected, so is up for mistranscription. You may need to use the search options that allow for variant versions of names. If you have access to the same database, but on a different site, the transcriptions may be more/less accurate and the search algorithms may be slightly different so that you will get the result you need on one site but not the other.
ChristineResearching: BENNETT (Leics/Birmingham-ish) - incl. Leonard BENNETT in Detroit & Florida ; WARR/WOR, STRATFORD & GARDNER/GARNAR (Oxon); CHRISTMAS, RUSSELL, PAFOOT/PAFFORD (Hants); BIGWOOD, HAYLER/HAILOR (Sussex); LANCASTER (Beds, Berks, Wilts) - plus - COCKS (Spitalfields, Liverpool, Plymouth); RUSE/ROWSE, TREMEER, WADLIN(G)/WADLETON (Devonport, E Cornwall); GOULD (S Devon); CHAPMAN, HALL/HOLE, HORN (N Devon); BARRON, SCANTLEBURY (Mevagissey)...

http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects....ages/index.htm about 35 records of Gargan baptisms and marriages on the Liverpool RC site
and 25 records on
OPC, Online Parish Clerk, family history, local history, free data, parish registers, census, Lancashire
and judging by the amount of Patricks and Catherines I would agree - it looks to be Irish based ...Last edited by garstonite; 17-07-14, 18:35.Allan ......... researching oakes/anyon/standish/collins/hartley/barker/collins-cheshire

Not quite the correct surname but, say Gargan with an Irish accent to the registrar, they could mistake it as Garrigan and if the family couldn't read ad write they'd never know.
