  • Unconsecrated Ground in a Cemetery

Can anyone please tell me why you would have part of a Cemetery which has unconsecrated ground. i.e. Whitburn Cemetery (Tyne and Wear) has an unconsecrated section.

Didn't they used to bury anyone who had committed suicide in un-consecrated ground?

Details of the person buried in Whitburn Cemetery - they were Christian and did not commit suicide. Puzzled.

All municipal cemeteries have a section of unconsecrated ground. Consecrated ground is normally just for C of E burials. Other denominations will have their own form of consecration RC, Methodists etc). All my Lancashire ancestors were buried in nonconformist sections - unconsecrated as far as the C of E is concerned.

Church GRAVEYARDS would indeed bury suicides in a nonconsecrated part of the graveyard - usually the perimeter - or sometimes they would be buried in consecrated ground but without a service. Depended on their staus really.

            Consecrated is often a misnomer.

Cemeteries are divided into two sections.
Consecrated: This section is consecrated on opening and is mainly used for Church of England burials.
Un-consecrated: This section the individual plots are often consecrated shortly before each burial (if the particular faith requires) and is mainly used for faiths other than Church of England and non-believers burials.

In a catholic burial for instance if the burial is to be in an unconsecrated part of a cemetery the tomb or burial plot is blessed (consecrated if it has not been blessed previously).

Do not forget every person who lives (or dies) in a parish has the undisputed right to be buried in the churchyard (if it is still open to burials), no matter who they are or what, if anything they believe.
            Cheers

Many thanks for your responses. Think the person in question may have been a methodist. Subject too delicate to ask members of the family. Think I shall leave it here. Thank you for responding.
