  • "Signatures & Handwriting" - Gresham College lecture podcast

I had thought that this topic could be interesting but it proves very interesting indeed for genealogists:

I've just found the time to listen to one of the Gresham College podcasts of a recent lecture on signatures - fascinating:
Signing your name is now such an automatic way of proving identity and validating a document that we forget that the signature has its own history. This presentation will explore the challenge of forged and fraudulent handwriting and the cultivation of professional expertise in its detection. The closely related field of graphology (interpretation of character from handwriting) will also be considered.

It touches on all sorts of issues surrounding signatures with snippets of info that are really quite important for genealogists - for example: about literacy and literacy, and about the significance of using a cross in lieu of a name.
