I have been trying, so far unsuccessfully, to discover who was living in Stanley Cottage, King Stanley, Gloucestershire, in 1891. FMP’s address search, which they admit has shortcomings, can’t find it nor can the free version of Ancestry in the local library.
I do know who was living there in 1901 and 1911. That was Charlotte Prout nee Burford, aka “Gran Prout”, and her family. [RG13/2440/F33/P1 and RG14PN15382 RG78PN933 RD327 SD5 ED3 SN1]. In 1891 she was living with her father, William, at Crawley Hill, Uley, [RG12/2002/38/1] while Alfred, her husband, is with his father, Joseph, at Field Farm, Town's End, Nymphsfield. [RG12/2002/F11/P4]. They married in Q4 1893 and had three daughters, Violet [1894], Lucy [1898] and Dorothy [1902].
Albert died in 1914 and, according to the story passed down, Charlotte was threatened with eviction. However she offered to pay her way by running a shop on the premises to which the landlord agreed. It was always assumed that this was a new venture but there is evidence to show that this was mistaken.
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...Family1903.jpg This photograph taken in 1903, possibly in connection with Dorothy’s christening judging by the buttonholes, clearly shows a shop window. What’s more, there is a painted advert for a cleaner on the front wall and, over the door and discernable on the original, painted on the lintel what appears to be “Prout Grocers…” Judging from the faded nature of the paintings, the shop had existed for some time, longer, perhaps, than Charlotte and Albert’s occupation. Hence the question “who lived here in 1891?” Probably another member of the very extended Prout families prevalent in the area, but which one? Any help would be appreciated.
