  • Find my Past buys Mocavo

    From the WDYTYA Magazine website:

US genealogy website Mocavo has been bought by Findmypast for an undisclosed sum.

Announced by both companies earlier today, the deal will see Mocavo become a fully-owned subsidiary of Findmypast, joining the British Newspaper Archive, Genes Reunited and Lives of the First World War.

Founded in 2011, Mocavo enables users to search through millions of records free of charge, including school yearbooks, church records and other historic volumes.

Claiming to upload 1,000 new datasets every day, it is the fastest growing genealogy company in the US.

To mark the beginning of the partnership, Findmypast has made full indexes to the US Census from 1790 to 1940 available through the Mocavo search engine.

In a blog post on the Mocavo website, company founder and CEO Cliff Shaw said he was "thrilled" to join forces with Findmypast.

“The combination of our companies will provide family history enthusiasts with unprecedented access to the stories of their ancestors," he said.

“Expect Mocavo to grow stronger with Findmypast’s support and to continue to drive innovation in the family history category.”

Crucially, Shaw was also able to confirm that Mocavo's ongoing pledge to keep its content available 'Free Forever' will remain unaffected despite the takeover.

The acquisition follows last week’s news that Findmypast – which is owned by DC Thomson Family History – had bought fellow genealogy subscription website Origins.net.

Despite the move, the Origins website will continue to run as normal, but its records will be made available across both platforms.
