Val - yes, this is Margaret with father and siblings but who knows who the Mary is, by 1911 he has moved an Ellen in, no sign of either Sarah or Mary!!! I have not been able to find a marriage for Henry and Sarah. I have the marriage certificate for the Sarah McPherson and Joshua but wrong father for Sarah (James), her father was Charles.

Thanks for all your searching Val, I also wondered if Sarah and Mary were the same person, but what about Ellen on the 1911, she has her children with her and they have taken the Blackledge surname? Who is she? The strange thing is Henry and Sarah have children together up until 1908, have found the christenings on Ancestry!
Maudarby - yes, this is the wedding of son Henry b.1890 parent's Henry and Sarah
Hi Terrianne
I thought that Henry b 1890 died as Harry in 1892. Who do you think the 3 year old Henry on the 1911 census belonged to? There is a birth reg for a Henry James Blackledge 1907 at Stepney.
Moggie
Are birth dates, as well as bp dates, given in the bp register on Ancestry? (Just trying to confirm last documentation for Sarah.)
If Sarah died (or cleared off) and Henry was left with a brood of small children, then he would have needed someone to look after them and keep house.
It wouldn't be the first time that a housekeeper appeared as wife in census returns. Sometimes because the couple lived as man and wife and fibbed to account for all the children; sometimes because a third person filling in/checking the form got in a muddle and made false assumptions about the household; sometimes because the couple were afraid to tell the truth - they might get into trouble for cohabiting, someone in authority might come noseying around about the children etc.
Interesting that they didn't marry for some years - have you found any possible deaths for Sarah?
Maudarby - I've got myself in a muddle. I've had a look through my Birth Certificates and the 3 year old Henry James Blackledge on the 1911 census is the son of Edward and Ellen, Henry's brother's child. Hope that makes sense!
Janet - Thanks for your reply. The last documentation for Sarah is a birth certificate for daughter Mary Ann born 1905. I've not managed to find any trace of Sarah's death either under her maiden name McPherson or Blackledge. The 1901 census was taken on 31 March, Henry is with Mary living 136 Eastfield Street, Stepney (she could well be helping out. A daughter of Henry and Sarah is christened the next day 1 April 1901 address given as 166 Eastfield Street, where are Sarah and the baby?
