There would be any number of things that could soldiers in prison - mostly for quite a short time - but being AWOL (which includes getting back from leave a bit late) would be quite common, I should think.
You'd need to see the records to find out.

Leonard BENNETT in Detroit & Florida ; WARR/WOR, STRATFORD & GARDNER/GARNAR (Oxon); CHRISTMAS, RUSSELL, PAFOOT/PAFFORD (Hants); BIGWOOD, HAYLER/HAILOR (Sussex); LANCASTER (Beds, Berks, Wilts) - plus - COCKS (Spitalfields, Liverpool, Plymouth); RUSE/ROWSE, TREMEER, WADLIN(G)/WADLETON (Devonport, E Cornwall); GOULD (S Devon); CHAPMAN, HALL/HOLE, HORN (N Devon); BARRON, SCANTLEBURY (Mevagissey)...

If you go at it from the other side of the story - you could look at a service record which normally specifies when people have committed offences.

Val - is this following on from your Marshall thread?
If so, if you are trying to follow up on the Frederick Marshall who is listed on this page, I think it refers to the following entry in FMP
This Frederick Marshall was in the 60th Rifles - the census entry shows Private 3/60 Regt - and if you look through the army records he was imprisoned for desertion.
His next of kin seems to be a Walter Marshall (brother) - which I don't think fits in with your Marshall family.Elaine

In those days a man was put in gaol for the most trivial offences, remembering that only a few years before a man was flogged for similar offences. Also at the time Great Britain carried
a large standing army. Another reason is that various units that were scattered around the country quite possibly did not have the facilities to keep a man closely confined and sent their
offenders to a central military correction establishment.Whoever said Seek and Ye shall find was not a genealogist.
