  • Found and Photographed a sampler, family names Warburton of Lostock

I visited a place near Chorley recently and photographed a Sampler embroidered with Family Names

    Quote
The names of the sons and daughters of John and Esther Warburton of Lostock

Deborah Warburton born Nov 10th 1844

Ann Warburton born December 17th 1846

Mary Ellen Warburton born May 19th 1849

Elizabeth Christiana Warburton born September 26th 1861

John Warburton born May 6th 1864

William Warburton born October 31th 1866

Lucy Warburton born July 19th 1869

A message about Honour thy Father and Thy Mother ect on the bottom with a patterned border around it

The Sampler was on the wall of an Old House locality Chorley selling Antiques and I found it interesting and photographed it to pass on to a tree owner.

Thanks Elaine for moving this thread

I really want to reunite the Sampler (or photo of it) with true Family but don't have the subs to check trees.
      Any help will be appreciated

That's a big jump between Mary Ellen (1849) and Elizabeth (1861) - is there a typo?

Esther as Mother's name is not easy.

          How about:
          Name: John Warburton
          Gender: Male
          Birth Date: 14 May 1864
          Christening Date: 26 Jun 1864
Christening Place: Newchurch in Rossendale, Lancashire, England
          Age at Christening: 0
          Father's Name: Moses Warburton
          Mother's name: Esther Mary

Here is a widowed Esther, with a son John, but the other children's names don't match up.

I think that Elizabeth, John William & Lucy must be born 1850's rather than 1860's as they all appear on the 1861 census in Lostock:

John Warburton 54 - farmer of 84 acres
            Esther Warburton 45
            Debroah Warburton 16
            Ann Warburton 14
            Mary Ann Warburton 11
            Elizabeth C Warburton 9
            William Warburton 5
            Lucy Warburton 1

No-one seems to have any of them in their Ancestry trees though :(

Deborah married Charles Gregory 29-Sep-1869 in Blackrod. They are on a couple of trees but not a main branch by the looks of it - only one generation of descendants shown.

William, Mary Ellen & Lucy are all still single in 1911, and in fact they are living together in Flixton. Therefore that's three of the seven children who probably had no descendants:

                    RG14; Piece: 23624.
                    William Warburton 54
                    Mary Ellen Warburton 61
                    Lucy Warburton 51

1871 in Blackrod. Deborah is married by then. No sign of John - he wasn't in 1861 either so maybe died as an infant?:

                      John Warburton 66
                      Esther Warburton 55
                      Ann Warburton 24
                      Mary Ellen Warburton 21
                      E C Warburton 19
                      William Warburton 13
                      Lucy Warburton 11

By 1881, Elizabeth has left home:
                      John Warburton 76
                      Esther Warburton 66
                      Ann Warburton 34
                      Mary E. Warburton 31
                      William Warburton 23
                      Lucy Warburton 21

1891, the parents have gone (presumably died) and Ann has also left:

                      William Warburton 34
                      Mary Ellen Warburton 41
                      Lucy Warburton 31

Therefore, it looks like if there are any descendants, they will be from Deborah (Gregory), Ann or Elizabeth.

Elizabeth married John Mather in 1880 (incorrectly shown as MATHEN on LancsBMD, and not shown at all on the GRO index!):

WARBURTON * Elizabeth C MATHEN John Blackrod, St Katherine Bolton 12/1/412

By 1911 she had nine children, so a there's good chance of living descendants there:

                        John Mather 64
                        Elizabeth Mather 59
                        Edith E Mather 29
                        Lucy E Mather 28
                        Albarta F Mather 26
                        Richard Mather 25
                        John W Mather 22
                        James W Mather 21
                        Esther A Mather 19
                        Nathan Mather 17
                        Jessie Mather 14

Ah yes, there's a Mather family tree on Ancestry - it shows lots of living descendants. Elizabeth is entered just as "Christiana Warburton" with no other details. This branch of her tree is from her son John W Mather.

Now here's a co-incidence: the tree owner is "y_pstills" - of course, living people are hidden from view on their tree so I can't see his/her name - but the only Stills name on the tree is a Maurice Stills, who actually died here in Perth, Western Australia! He seems to be the father-in-law of Elizabeth Christiana Warburton's great-grand-daughter! So if you like, I could send them a pm to put them in touch with you.

                          Cheers,
                          Richard

Did a bit more digging (it's not too hard to put names to the living people on Ancestry Trees, given access to the GRO index, etc!). I can't put names on here as they are obviously still living, but she is definitely the great grand-daughter of Elizabeth Christiana Warburton and is in New Zealand. Have an address even!

Well done Richard, I think I may have read the years wrong as the sampler is embroidery so an easy mistake to make though I did wonder why the gap in years.
I only have the photograph but can put the tree owner in touch with the House I saw the actual sampler on the wall.

                                I will PM you

I have examined the sampler again and the dates are wrong that I originally gave the third number is a 5 not 6 as in 1851

Yes, hopefully she will thrilled to find something that was actually made by her great great grandmother, especially given its relevance to her family history. A big well done to Edna for making the effort to reunite the item with its family!

                                        Cheers,
