  • Lost in New York/US

Jacobus van Deelen, born in Holland 1858 married Jana Verwoerd (b 1860) in 1880 in Netherlands. I think I have found them in 1890 travelling to New York, with 2 daughters Dina, b. 1882 and Anna b.1888. He is listed as Jacobus Van Dalen and wife Juliana. I can't find any trace of them after that. Can anyone see anything?

Possibly on the right track - I found my couple had a child Wendelina born 17 Nov 1881 in Holland - Likely to be Dina. I found a reference to a Jacob Vandeelen who died in San Francisco in 1906, but he was only 15. However I googled Vandeelen San Francisco and came up with this : http://myrootsplace.com/getperson.ph...14704&tree=MRP. The name could be a derivative of Wendelina, the dob is 1 year out, exactly and the father s name matches.

Searched for Henry Vandeelen on Ancestry and found him here: http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/78...l=ReturnRecord

1910 us census, mother is Julia Oleveria, married for one year to Joseph Oleveria. Can't see Henry in 1900 yet, but I think this might fit.

How sure are you about his dob? Go to the Chronicling America website. This is a direct link to the search results, I hope it works. There are two relevant newspapers entries from 1898 and 1899.

If the link does not work go to
Search America's historic newspaper pages from 1756-1963 or use the U.S. Newspaper Directory to find information about American newspapers published between 1690-present.

In the phrase search box enter: Jacob vanDeelen

Phil those are very interesting! I know Jacobs dob was 27/4/1858, as I have seen the entry on the Dutch records, which would have made him only 41. However, the Dutch write their 1s in a strange way which make them look like 7's (still catches me out when I'm going through their records) so could easily have been misread. The 2nd clip matches exactly - Diana was Dina, Annie was Anna and I have already found a son Jacob (Jakie) who died aged 15 in 1906. I am convinced that you have found the correct death for Jacob.

Mind you, this throws up another mystery - a number of records make this quite confusing this is the time line as far as I see it

            1898 - Jacob dies
1899 - end of March Johannes Wilhelm is born
1899 - September, Johannes Wilhelm dies
1900 - as referenced in the family tree on Ancestry, 1900 census - this says Jacob is still alive, but I think is someone else - see below. The rest of the details match up, apart from Julia's (who is called Anna here) age which must be incorrect as she says she is 30 but has been married 20 years - http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/76...l=ReturnRecord
1902 - Edward Mockel born to Julia - in 1910 census his father is said to be German, which matches to "Jacob" in the 1900.
            1906 - Jacob jr dies
1909 - Manuel J Oleveria marries Julie Van Deelen on Jan 27 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3....26701,31239101.
1910 - Manuel (called Joseph M) and Julia living with her children.
1914 - Manuel dies - he was a fireman in the US Navy and had a military burial http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin...iv=1&ml_rpos=4
            1921 - Julia dies http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg...GRid=47223013&

So who was Edwards father - In later years Edward is known as Edward Maykel. At the moment I cannot find any birth for him. I also need to find marriages for the girls, but the obituary notice does give some clues.

I must admit that I didn't try other variations of the surname and first names on this website. That may be a worthwhile exercise.
              Pleased to help.
