Sometimes called Holme on the Wolds, or Dalton Holme, as well as South Dalton. Home of the Hotham family who live at South Dalton Hall

            Sorry not made myself clear
Thomas has stated 1851 born what looks like Eaftstone Yorkshire
and on the 1861 Ebstone Yorkshire, can't find either.

Not finding either by using google maps but have a look through GENUKI Yorkshire Towns and Villages http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/#Towns

                1851 is Lofthouse.

1861 definitely looks like Ebstone, but as you say doesn't seem to exist.

There is Ebberstone, but that is about 60 miles from Lofthouse so I'm not sure.

I would have said Ebberston, on the Scarborough to Pickering road.
Pop south west to Malton, south over the Wolds and you're well on the way to South Dalton. Plenty of estate villages on the way, where a blacksmith would have found employment.

Many thank for all your replies. Janet thanks for your local knowledge, Ebberston sounds like the most likely. Now to try and find his birth.
