I only have FMP. On ancestry a search on military records for John Cattell (no middle name) brings up 3 results. Would some kind person please look them up for me? The man I am looking for was born in 1899 in the West Bromich region.

There are no John Cattell's on the WW1 lists on Ancestry or are you looking at another country?

I selected 'search' then 'Military Records' then entered John Cattell. There are 20 on the first page but only 3 with no middle name or initial. These are:

British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920
        DRAFT, ENLISTMENT AND SERVICEView Image
        NAME: John Cattell
        BIRTH: year - Stafford
        MILITARY: year

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920
AWARDS & DECORATIONS OF HONOURView Image
        NAME: John Cattell

        NAME: John Cattell

The last two might be a duplication of the same record.

His name was definitely John with no other Christian names.

On the Medal rolls there are only 2 just John Cattell, the rest have either an initial or middle name.
First one on the medal card reads John Cattell, K. Berks R. PTE. 43274 was awarded the Victory medal, no d.o.b no address,
Second one, John Cattell, South Staffordshire Regiment. (2 separate numbers) 3290, 240738 Pte. awarded Victory, British and Star. Written is DISMB 14/12/18

The one above with service history, the papers are in a really bad state but I did find a date so I don't think this is your man, it's dated 1885, but this is in with the WW1 service records.

Was he actually born in West Bromwich or the surrounding area?

I was wondering about the Arthur John Cattell someone found. Handsworth runs into Hockley.
