Working from that 1881 census using Thomas born c1855 Ireland.
These are possibles:
1891 census
RG12; Piece: 3149; Folio: 34; Page: 46;
1901 census
RG13; Piece: 3653; Folio: 122; Page: 32.
1911 census
RG14; Piece: 23565.
1911 census shows Thomas' place of birth as Glasslough, Monaghan, Ireland - so might be worth following this up to see if Thomas, Susanna and Edward are linked in any way.Elaine

hi elaine thanks for your imput on thomas mckenna ,i think they are two different people though.it is strange that two thomases have the irish, worsely lancs connection but our thomas james is younger than the one you found being born in 1881,i have him on the1911 census aged 29 as a boarder with his wife dorothy lizzie and two children ,this thomas j is the correct one as dorothy l is in our family ,stranger still both thomases are stud grooms

I am not suggesting the Thomas aged 29 in 1911, is the same person as the Thomas born 1855 (from the 1881 census).
You said the parents of your Thomas are Edward and Maggie.
Is the 1881 census (post #4) the correct census for Edward and Maggie (Margaret)?
If so, what I am suggesting is that the Thomas McKenna (1855) and Susanna McKenna (b1863) shown in the same household in the 1881 census could be siblings to Edward.
Tracing Thomas (born 1855) forward through to the 1911 census suggests that he was born in Glasslough, Monaghan, Ireland.
I have no experience of researching Irish records, but I would be looking to see if there are any church records available for Glasslough to see whether Thomas (1855), Susanna (1863) and Edward (1847 ?) are possible siblings.Elaine

sorry about that elaine ,im new to this and i cant get my head round it sometimes, then i have to hand it over to my daughter ,shes got a younger head than me .i will certainly follow that line which does sound logical and may solve the mystery and also try to get into church records also many thanks .

No problem. The explanation of my thoughts wasn't exactly clear!
I presume at the moment you don't know the maiden name for Margaret/Maggie (Edward's wife).
If you order one of their children's birth certificates then this will show Margaret's maiden name. They can be ordered from the General Register Office - cost £9.25 each. You will need to find the registration details from the BMD index - if you need any help then just ask!
.. and of course, once you have Margaret's maiden name it should make it easier for find Edward & Margaret's marriage.Elaine

You still need to get a birth certificate to confirm this ... but just a possibility ..
In 1881 there is a child name Rose Ann McKenna, born c 1875 in Whitefield, Lancashire.
According to GENUKI, Whitefield comes under Pilkington.
On the Lancs OPC website some of the birth registrations have mother's maiden name.
There is an entry in 1874 for a Rose Ann MCKENNA - mother's maiden name SHERIDAN. Registered in Pilkington.
On Ancestry, in the Ireland Civil Registration Marriage Index, there is an entry for Edward M'Kenna marrying in 1873 in the registration district of Monaghan.
As is normal with the index, there are four names transcribed
-Sarah Tierney
- Edward M'Kenna
- John M'Caffery
- Margaret Sheridan

May be a coincidence - but certainly worth making a note of it as the names and time frame seem to fit nicely.Elaine
