I am trying to find Mary Ann Appleton on the 1941 census, on the 1851 census it says she was born in South Rowan, Yorkshire, she is living in Congleton at this point with her husband John Taylor and on the 1861 census it says she was born in Congleton, Cheshire she is living in Congleton with her husband again. From her marriage certificate I know her father is a George Appleton a painter, I can't find her in the 1841 census can any one help please?

I think they might be two different wives. On the 1861 the wife's age suddenly changes to 27 (c 1834) which is quite a jump although I know it happens. The youngest daughter has a middle name of Snelson.
There's a marriage in Congleton Q/E Dec 1855 and 2 of the names are John Taylor and Mary Partington Snelson. Cheshire BMD confirms that pair and has the marriage at Astbury St MaryJackie

There's a George Appleton painter here. Swan St Brinnington, Stockport.

George 40 painter
Elizabeth 40 cotton weaver
James 20 painter
Alice 13
Joseph 8
All born in county except the wife. Unfortunately there's no Mary with them but there are 3 other Mary Appletons living together in Brinnington. Speculation really at this stage whether one of them is yours

never thought it might be a different wife but did notice the different age, so my Mary possibly died between 1851 and 1855, that would also explain the different places born. Thanks for the baptism and the Stockport connection makes sense as their address on marriage cert was Heaton Norris which is in the Stockport area. Thank you everyone for you help, I would still be pulling my hair out

Thanks Susan I did look for South Rowan myself and couldn't find anything and did wonder if the spelling was how the person doing the census heard it. On that basis Southowram makes sense. Now just need to rewrite this part of the family tree making sure I have the right children to the correct wives for John. Thanks you everyone who has helped me sort this lot out.
